AMES, Iowa - A year ago, Obsa Ali ran the second fastest 5,000 meters in school history at the Iowa State Classic.

On Friday, the All-American nearly repeated the feat - clocking a 13:59.73 to finish ninth overall at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center as the University of Minnesota men's track & field program began competition this weekend at the Iowa State Classic. Ali was just over two seconds off his personal record of 13:57.43 in the 5,000 meters.

The distance events were highlights for Minnesota in the opening day of competition as Evan Ferlic added a personal record of 8:09.89 in the 3,000 meters, good enough to finish 13th and jump into 10th all-time on Minnesota's top performers list. Hamza Ali finished 21st at 8:16.33.

Meanwhile, Minnesota had a heavy influence in the long jump led by Mason Roomes runner-up showing at 7.09 meters (23-03.25 ft.). Sammie Houston came in fourth at 6.99 meters (22-11.25 ft.) while Jonathan Johnson was seventh at 6.79 meters (22-03.50 ft.) and John Uchytil finished 10th at 6.02 meters (19-09.00 ft.).

Uchytil and Teddy Frid were also part of a four-way tie for fourth in the pole vault at 4.77 meters (15-07.75 ft.).Frid added a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdle finals at 8.09 while Eric Walker finished eighth at 8.19.

The Gophers conclude the Iowa State Classic on Saturday.
