NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 37-ranked Gopher Men’s Tennis team begins its NCAA Tournament run Friday against No. 19 Georgia at the Norman Regional hosted by No. 14 Oklahoma at the Heading Family Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
No. 37 Minnesota (15-8) fell in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament against eventual Big Ten Champion, No. 3 Ohio State. Felix Corwin earned a major upset victory over No. 6 Mikael Torpegaard at #1 singles as the Gophers would eventually fall 4-1. The previous day, the Maroon & Gold earned a 4-1 victory over No. 49 Indiana.
Postseason Honors
Late last month, a trio of Gophers earned All-Big Ten honors. Matic Spec earned his fourth All-Big Ten First Team selection during his senior campaign, while Felix Corwin joined him on the First Team and Stefan Milicevic earned his first All-Big Ten selection on the Second Team. Spec finished the Big Ten season a perfect 10-0 at the #2 singles position. Corwin went 7-3 at the #1 singles spot, while Milicevic was 7-3 at #3. Corwin also received Minnesota’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award selection for 2018.
One-Man Show
Felix Corwin earned a selection to this month’s NCAA Singles Tournament as one of 49 at-large selections announced earlier this month. The event is hosted by Wake Forest in Winston, Salem North Carolina beginning on Wednesday, May 29. The Gophers’ last selection to the field was Leandro Toledo in 2015.
Gophers in the Polls
Minnesota held serve at the No. 37 ranking following the Big Ten Tournament, while each of its three singles stars moved up in the Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings. Felix Corwin leaped from 79 to No. 53 last week after his upset victory over No. 6 Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State. After going 1-0 on the weekend, Stefan Milicevic moved up from 79 to No. 81. Matic Spec went winless on the weekend, snapping his nine-match winning streak,
Scouting the Bulldogs
No. 19 Georgia (13-10) fell 4-0 to Texas A&M in the SEC Tournament last time out … head coach Manuel Diaz is in his 30th season … the Bulldogs boast five ranked singles players on their roster: No. 37 Wayne Montgomery, No. 42 Jane Zielinski, No. 58 Walker Duncan, No. 70 Emil Reinberg, and No. 97 Nathan Ponwith … Minnesota’s Stefan Milicevic matched up with Reinberg at the ITA Fall National Championships, falling in three games … Montgomery and Duncan rank as the No. 47 doubles pair nationally while Zelinksi and Robert Loeb are No. 63 and Zelinksi/Duncan are No. 64 … Minnesota is just 1-5 all-time against Georgia, but the teams have not met since prior to the year 2000.
Surveying the Field
No. 14 Oklahoma competed at the ITA Central Regional hosted by Minnesota late last fall … the Sooners roster includes No. 30 Alexander Bakshi and No. 64 Ferran Calvo … Bakshi defeated Felix Corwin in the Sweet 16 of the ITA Regional last fall while Stefan Milicevic defeated Calvo in the semifinals at Baseline Tennis Center … Bakshi and Jake van Emburgh rank No. 44 as a doubles pair while Adrian Oetzbach and Calvo rank no. 82 … No. 43 Utah has just one ranked player, No. 101 Dan Little … the Gophers are 0-3 all-time against the Sooners but own a 4-1 record against the Utes.
