INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – A strong final round vaulted the Minnesota men's golf team up the leaderboard and into a tie for fifth place as the 14th annual Gopher Invitational concluded Monday at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.

The Golden Gophers' "A" team shot a one-under par 283 to move up from its ninth place position after round two. It was the team's second best round ever at Windsong, which has been home to the tournament since it moved there in 2013. Minnesota's 54-hole total of 864 tied the team with Purdue as the Gophers recorded their best finish since coming in fourth in 2014.

Oklahoma captured the team title for the third time in the last four years with a tournament record score of 847 to hold off second-place Texas (850) and third-place Iowa (851). Oklahoma golfer Blaine Hale birdied the final four holes to tie Arkansas' Wiliam Buhl for the individual title with matching 54-hole scores of seven-under 206.

Minnesota's "A" team had every golfer card rounds of 72 or better, led by freshman Lincoln Johnson and junior Thomas Longbella who each shot a one-under 70.

Johnson birdied two of the first seven holes and three of the first 11 to get as low as two-under during the round. He finished his first collegiate tournament with a 54-hole total of 214, one over par, to tie for 11th place with six other golfers.

One of those golfers Johnson tied with was fellow Gopher Evan Long. The sophomore carded a final round of even-par 71 to finish at 214 after a 71-72-71 tournament.

Longbella was two-under through the first six holes and recorded only a single bogey over the final 12 holes to finish in a tie for 18th place with a three-over par score of 216.

Junior Noah Rasinski finished his first tournament as a Gopher in a tie for 38th place thanks to a one-over round of 72. He was even through nine holes and dropped two shots through 13, but responded with a birdie on 16 to get one shot back before the end of the round.

Sophomore Angus Flanagan was the final member of the "A" team and improved his score each round with a 78-75-72 tournament. That total of 225 put him in 63rd place.

Minnesota's "B" team consisted for seniors Campbell Fisher and Peter Jones, redshirt sophomore Gus Minkin and freshmen Will Grevlos and Harry Plowman-Ollington.

Jones was the top finisher among the five as he tied for 28th with a five-over total of 218. He was one-over par in the final round with a 72, finishing strong with a pair of birdies on his final two holes.
Minkin was three shots behind Jones with a total of 221. He was two-over Monday, including a one-under front nine, to tie for 44th.

Grevlos had his best round of the tournament as he matched Minkin with a two-over 73. Grevlos tied for 52nd overall in the tournament with a 223.

Like Grevlos, Plowman-Ollington also posted his best score of the Gopher Invitational on Monday with an eight-over 79. He came in 75th with a 245.

Fisher's final round 79 was the only round he completed in the tournament, while redshirt freshman Ben Frazzini competed as an individual and came in 64th place with a 54-hole total of 226. He was four-over on Monday with a 75, though he did finish his round like Jones and birdied his final two holes.

The Minnesota men's golf team returns to action Sept. 21-23 at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Carefree, Ariz.
