MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gopher men's golf team hits the road for the first time in its fall season this weekend at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Ariz. The tournament is taking place at the Mirabel Golf Club, which is playing at 7,081 yards with a par of 70. The teams will play 18 holes apiece on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Georgia State is set to host the tournament, which features a strong field that includes five ranked teams in No. 6 Auburn, No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 9 LSU, No. 13 Clemson and No. 19 Arizona State. Houston, Kansas State, Kent State, North Carolina State, Oregon and Oregon State join the Gophers to round out the list of competitors.
Minnesota will be represented in Arizona by juniors Thomas Longbella and Noah Rasinski, sophomores Angus Flanagan and Evan Long and freshman Lincoln Johnson. Rasinski will tee it up first for the Gophers at 9:50 a.m. CT, followed by his teammates in 10 minute intervals. Redshirt sophomore Gus Minkin will also travel and will compete as an individual beginning at 10:50 a.m. CT.
The Gophers shaved 17 strokes off of their second round score in the season-opening Gopher Invitational to push them from ninth place to tie for fifth by the tournament's end.
The underclassmen duo of Long and Johnson are coming off of strong first outings. Long led Minnesota during the tournament and set new career bests in the first round with a 71 and 54-hole score of 214. He shot one-over par and split 11th place with Johnson. In his first collegiate meet, Johnson never shot higher than 73 and carded a one-under par 70 in the final round.
Longbella and Minkin both recorded rounds under par during the Gopher Invitational and finished tied for 18th and 44th, respectively. Rasinski made his Gopher debut as a transfer and tied for 38th in the tournament with a score of 220, while Flanagan improved each round for a final score of 225 and 63rd place.
Minnesota, Kent State, LSU and Georgia State all return to the Maui Jim this year, as does defending tournament champion Arizona State. Flanagan led the Gophers in the tournament last year as he charted career bests in low round, 54-hole score, finish and tournament score to par with a score of 212, four-under par.
