Gophers Open Campaign with Oz Memorial

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's cross country program will open up the 2018 season this Friday with the Oz Memorial at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. The men's four-mile race will start out the competition at 6:30 p.m. CT followed by the women's six-kilometer race at 7:00 p.m. CT. Joining the Gophers in the field will be Drake, Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul. 

Ferlic to Captain Gophers XC Squad
Redshirt junior Evan Ferlic will serve as team captain for the Minnesota men's cross country program this year. The Roseville, Minn., native posted personal records in three of his five races last season with the Maroon & Gold and factored into the team's score four times. He opened the year with a an eight-kilometer personal record of 25:08.0 at the IU Open and later improved that mark to 24:34.5 at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational. Ferlic closed out the year by running a 10-kilometer personal record of 29:59.61 at the NCAA Midwest Regional – a mark that ranks 11th all-time at the University of Minnesota. 

Gophers Add Four to 2018 Cross Country Team
Minnesota will have four new faces on the roster this season as the Gophers have added true freshmen Declan Dahlberg (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds Park Academy) and Khalid Hussein (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) along with redshirt freshman transfer Seth Eliason (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins / Georgetown). Additionally, Dawson LaRance will join Minnesota's cross country squad as a redshirt freshman this season after competing for the Gophers track & field program as a true freshman last season.

Following this weekend's Oz Memorial, the Maroon & Gold will have one final home cross country meet on the schedule when the Gophers host the 33rd annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Les Bolstad Golf Course. Learn more about the Griak here.

Last Time Out: 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional 
Minnesota closed out the 2017 campaign with a fifth-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional while the Gophers posted five of the top-12 10-kilometer times in program history at the race. Obsa Ali broke a 41-year old school 10-kilometer record (29:23.06) while Connor Olson now sits third (29:43.39), Alec Basten is sixth (29:48.61), Evan Ferlic is 11th (29:59.61) and Hamza Ali is 12th at 30:01.80. All but Obsa Ali, who completed his cross country eligibility last year, will be back in uniform for Minnesota this year.

The Maroon & Gold are back in action next weekend with Nebraska's Greeno/Dirksen Invite in Lincoln on Saturday, Sept. 15 . The race will serve as a preview of this year's Big Ten meet for the Gophers, which will be held by the Cornhuskers on Oct. 28.
