LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Minnesota track & field program closed out Nebraska's Graduate Classic with 13 event titles this weekend, adding eight on Saturday in the final day of competition at Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The Gophers earned five men's titles at the event including a pair of wins on Saturday and eight women's titles with six in the final day of competition.
"It was a good overall team day, a nice first meet of the year, and a good first step for us," director of track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "Obviously we have a lot of work to do, but I'm happy for the most part with where we're at. It's a process of building throughout the season; every week counts. We just have to get back to work on Monday, keep doing the right things on and off the track, and keep supporting each other and being great teammates."
On Saturday, the men's competitors dominated the 600 meters with the top five finishers and six of the top seven competitors. Ben Psicihulis led the way with a win at 1:18.36 followed by Chris Trotter, Lucas Trapp, Grant Fuller and Matt Rosen, respectively, while Collin Sieffert finished seventh.
The Gophers also picked up a win in the 400 meters from newcomer Elliott Davis in his debut with the Maroon & Gold as Davis clocked a 48.51 to lead the field. Matthew Baker finished sixth in the event for Minnesota.
