Minnesota Hosts Michigan This Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gopher Hockey program closes out a four-game home stand this weekend with a two-game, Big Ten series against Michigan at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Both games in the Friday/Saturday series are set for 7 p.m. CT on FOX Sports North PLUS.
Sheehy Stays Hot
Senior captain Tyler Sheehy was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week and the NCAA Second Star of the Week after leading the nation with seven points (one goal, six assists) last week. The forward, who has points in 15 of the last 16 games for Minnesota, is the Gophers active leading scorer and is tied for third among active NCAA skaters with 135 points (51 goals, 84 assists) in 136 career games. The Hobey Baker Award nominee ranks 41st all-time at Minnesota in career scoring.
Pitlick Nears 100-Games Mark
Junior forward Rem Pitlick enters this weekend's series with 91 points (41 goals, 50 assists) in 99 career games at Minnesota. One of several second generation Gophers on this year's roster, Pitlick leads Minnesota with 15 goals and 28 points in 25 games this year. The Nashville Predators prospect has points in 15 of the last 16 games and 20 of Minnesota's 25 games this year. The Hobey Baker Award nominee has not been held off the scoresheet in back-to-back games this season.
The California Kid
Sophomore forwad Brannon McManus notched five points (one goal, four assists) last weekend and has already set new single-season career highs with 18 points, 10 goals and eight assists. McManus is currently riding a career-long, six-game point streak.
Putting the Special in Special Teams
The Maroon & Gold special teams shined in last weekend's Border Battle, going 6-for-9 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Minnesota now leads the Big Ten and ranks fifth in the nation on the advantage at .258 (23-for-89) with five-straight games featuring a power-play goal (and eight of the last 10). Meanwhile, the penalty kill leads the league and has not surrendered a goal in seven of the last eight games.
Gophers Honor 1979 Team with 3M Arena at Mariucci Record
Saturday night was a night to celebrate for two reasons including the 40th anniversary celebration of the University of Minnesota's 1979 national championship squad. With members of the team being honored throughout the game, the Gophers set a new 3M Arena at Mariucci attendance record at 10,686. The crowd topped a 14-year old facility record of 10,587 fans from another Border Battle matchup between Minnesota and Wisconsin on Nov. 6, 2004.

Minnesota enters this weekend's Big Ten series against the Wolverines with a 140-127-16 all-time record against Michigan after going 1-0-1 in Ann Arbor to close out the first half. Three Gophers are averaging more than a point a game agaisnt Michigan in their careers -- Tyler Sheehy (17 points in 15 games), Rem Pitlick (11 points in 10 games) and Tommy Novak (13 points in 11 games). Mat Robson is 1-0-1 all-time against the Wolverines in three career appearances while Eric Schierhorn is 5-7-1.

Success in the Classroom
The spring semester starts last week (Jan. 22) at Minnesota, but the fall semester was unforgettable as the Gophers recorded the highest semester GPA in program history at 3.41 and the highest cumulative GPA in program history at 3.22 (as an athletic department, Minnesota followed suit with school records of 3.25 cumulative GPA and a 3.25 semester GPA.

Minnesota's 9-4 win last Friday was the team's highest offensive output of the season and highest since scoring nine in a 9-2 win in Madison on Jan. 23, 2016. the last time the Gophers scored more goals in a game was a 10-3 win at Minnesota State on Jan. 17, 2004...two seniors returned to the lineup last weekend after missing time with injuries -- Ryan Norman scored in his first game back on Friday after a four-game absence while Darian Romanko returned after an eight-game absence...Jack Sadek needs one point to set a new single-season career high...Saturday's game was the first time this season Minnesota had the same number of shots on goal as its opponent.

Senior goaltender Eric Schierhorn (2-4-0) picked up his 12th career shutout last month as the two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year claimed sole possession of third all-time at Minnesota (only Adam Wilcox and Kellen Briggs have more with 13 each). With a 57-45-4 career record, Schierhorn ranks tied for sixth in school history in wins and sixth in saves at 2,579. Schierhorn has made 109 all-time appearances for the Maroon & Gold, fourth in program history behind only Adam Hauser (151), Kellen Briggs (132) and Adam Wilcox (115).
Minnesota Announces Captains for 2018-19
Four senior forwards will serve as leads for the University of Minnesota during the 2018-19 campaign with Tyler Sheehy and Brent Gates Jr. acting as captains for the Maroon & Gold while Jack Ramsey and Darian Romanko will act as assistant captains. Sheehy returns after serving as team captain as a junior last year while Gates, Ramsey and Romanko will wear letters for the first time as seniors. The four skaters continue a long tradition of Gopher Hockey captains dating back to the program's first season of play in 1921-22 when Chet Bros led the Maroon & Gold. Counting the new additions, 170 Gophers have worn a letter at the University of Minnesota in the program's 97-year history.
Gophers in the NHL Draft
Thirteen current Gophers have had their names called at the NHL Entry Draft including newcomers Robbie Stucker (2017, Columbus, Seventh Round, 210th), Sammy Walker (2017, Tampa Bay, Seventh Round, 200th), Blake McLaughlin (2018, Anaheim, Third Round, 79th) and Sampo Ranta (2018, Colorado, Third Round, 78th). Ranta and McLaughlin were selected with back-to-back picks in 2018 -- the sixth time in Gophers history that has happened. Ten NHL teams have prospects on the Gopher Hockey roster this year with Anaheim, Tampa Bay and Nashville each listing two draftees with Minnesota.

Incoming Gophers freshman Sammy Walker closed out his prep career by leading Edina High School to a third-place finish at the 2018 MSHSL Class AA State Tournament, earning all-tournament honors along with Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year accolades. Walker was also 34th recipient of the annual Mr. Hockey Award, given to the top senior high school boy's hockey player in the state of Minnesota. Of the 34 honorees in the award's history, 23 have gone on to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota.
