MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher Hockey program scored four unanswered goals to close out this weekend's Big Ten series against No. 9 Penn State with a 4-1 win at 3M Arena at Mariucci on Saturday night.
All four goals and all 11 points for the Maroon & Gold were scored by upperclassmen led by three points from Rem Pitlick and two from Brent Gates Jr., while Mat Robson made 31 saves on 32 shots to pick up his first career win over Penn State. The junior netminder improved to 5-4-4 on the year with Chase Berger's opening goal at 12:36 of the first period standing as his only blemish in the performance.
After that, it was all golden for the Gophers (7-8-4 overall, 4-3-3-0 Big Ten) as Minnesota snapped a five-game losing streak to the Nittany Lions (12-6-2, 4-5-1-1).
Tyler Nanne sent the game into the first intermission tied at 1-1 following his second goal of the year at 15:55 of the first period. The defenseman was set up by Ryan Zuhlsdorf and Pitlick for the equalizer with Pitlick picking up his second assist of the game on a give-and-go with Gates at 7:49 of the second period for the eventual game winner. Gates has now scored a goal in five-straight games (a career best) and six of the last seven contests.
Jack Ramsey added to the Maroon & Gold lead later in the period when he scored at 17:24 with his second of the year and second of the weekend. The senior forward and alternate captain scored in back-to-back games for the first time in his career after being set up by Ryan Norman and Tommy Novak. Six of Ramsey's 22 career points and three of his seven career goals have come against Penn State (his highest offensive production against an opponent).
Minnesota's GPS Lines of Gates, Pitlick and Tyler Sheehy closed out the night with an empty-net goal at 19:49 to put the game away as Pitlick notched his ninth goal of the season and 20th point – both figures lead the Maroon & Gold. Since coming together on Nov. 23, the GPS Line has combined for 16 goals and 35 points in 10 games while Sheehy improved his career-long point streak to 10 games in the victory.
The Gophers were outshot 32-27 in the win while going 1-for-1 on the penalty kill and 0-for-2 on the power play. Peyton Jones took the loss for the Nittany Lions, making 23 saves to move to 8-4-2 on the year.
Minnesota returns to action next weekend with a Big Ten series at Notre Dame.
