Preview: Gophers Travel South to Take on FSU

10/15/2019 12:09:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

On the heels of last weekend's season opener against Florida, the Minnesota swimming & diving program will travel to Tallahassee, Fla. this Friday, Oct. 18, to take on the Florida State (FSU) Seminoles. The dual will begin at 6 p.m. CST.

"We are very excited to get on the road with this team for the first time this year," said head coach Kelly Kremer. "FSU is a great program and we're looking forward to the challenge of competing against them outdoors on their campus."

SERIES HISTORY

These two teams last squared up a season ago, as the Gopher women fell to the Seminoles, 176-124. Prior to this match-up, Minnesota had won three straight duals, the most recent being a 153.5-146.5 victory in 2017-18. The all-time series currently sits at 3-1 in favor of the Gophers.

In last year's dual, the Minnesota men's team was able to secure their first win of the season by topping the Seminoles, 181-119. This showing by the men put the overall series between the two programs at 1-2, favoring FSU.

A LOOK AT THE FSU WOMEN

The FSU women enter the week ranked just inside the top-25 at no. 23. Coming into Saturday's meet, the Seminoles own a 0-2 record after falling to Duke at home this past weekend, 123-177.

As for their 2018-19 campaign, Florida State finished 11-1 (4-0 ACC) and registered a 34th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Additionally, the women swam their way to sixth place at the ACC Championships.

THE SEMINOLE MEN

Holding the no. 17 spot in the nation, the FSU men possess an even 1-1 record after pulling out a tight 153-147 victory against Duke on Saturday.

Last season, the Seminole men earned a 14th place finish at the NCAA Championships en route to a 4-5 dual record. They finished 5th at the 2019 ACC Championships.

NEWCOMERS MAKING NOISE

Although the Gophers came up short in their 2019-20 debut, the team saw a surplus of promising signs from its bright group of newcomers. Three different freshmen swimmers set new personal times in Rachel Butler (200 breast), Isaac Barrera (200 fly) and Grace Wollschlager (200 fly), while Jordan McGinty sped her way to a first place finish in the 200 free. As for the divers, Jake Butler swept the one-meter and three-meter on the men's side.

KOZELSKY IN STRIDE

Senior Lindsey Kozelsky heads into Saturday's showdown with the Seminoles on a hot start to begin the season. The All-American won both the 100 breast and 200 breast in the team's Florida dual with respective times of 1:00.50 and 2:12.83. With Kozelsky seemingly already hitting her stride, the Gophers appear to be in good hands in this weekend's breaststroke events.

In the 100 breast, Kozelsky touched the wall alongside freshman Grace Bennin, who finished shortly after the senior to capture a one-two finish in the event. In doing so, Bennin added her name to a lengthy list of Gopher newcomers that enjoyed strong debuts against Florida and will look to provide a boost at this Saturday's dual.

VETERAN WATCH - WOMEN

Both Emily Cook and Tevyn Waddell are poised to be major factors as the Gophers trek to Tallahassee. Waddell competes in the backstroke, butterfly and freestyle events, while Cook is backstroker. As two of the team's returning All-Americans, Minnesota will likely need the duo to build upon their performances in the season opener in order to bounce back against FSU.

IN THE DIVING WELL - WOMEN

Freshman Jaclynn Fowler and transfer sophomore Jae Sarkis paced the Gophers last weekend in the diving well, securing the team's top two scores in both events. Fowler led the Gophers in the one-meter dive, securing third place with a 268.20 score. Sarkis also raised some eyebrows in her Gopher debut with her second place performance in the three-meter (286.73). These two divers hold the key to Minnesota's success in the upcoming diving events against FSU, along with transfer sophomore Joy Zhu, who may be primed for a breakout dual.

SATES BREAKING OUT

One of the more impressive performances against Florida on the men's side came from junior Tim Sates, who finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.93. After being tabbed as a swimmer ready to take the next step in 2019-20, Sates will look to continue his early success in Saturday's freestyle events.

FRESHMEN FEATS

In addition to Barrera's personal best performance in the 200 fly, freshman Gavin Olson is also making good on some early season praise from Kremer. Olson performed well in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 medley against Florida, as the Littleton, Colo. native aims to continue progressing for a men's team that is need of a boost.

VETERAN WATCH - MEN

Senior All-American Tuomas Pokkinen and junior Eitan Yudashkin represent two of the more experienced swimmers on the men's side. Last weekend, Pokkinen hauled in respective finishes of third (20.92) and fourth (49.24) in the 50 free and 100 fly. Meanwhile, Yudashkin touched the wall third in the 100 breast (56.21) and second in both the 200 breast (2:04.07) and 200 IM (1:54.31). As two of the team's biggest scoring weapons, Pokkinen and Yudashkin's performances against Florida State will go a long way in determining the outcome of the dual.

IN THE DIVING WELL - MEN

At the Florida dual, freshman Jake Butler swept the men's diving events. Senior diving captain Jeremy Moser remains Minnesota's most reliable scorer in the diving well, but this new crop of Gophers, led by Butler, showed worthy of receiving the torch last weekend. Butler and Moser will be the divers to watch against FSU, as will junior Duncan Lester, who placed third in the one-meter and fifth in the three-meter a week ago.
