NOTRE DAME, Ind. --Ā The No. 29 University of Minnesota women's cross country squad placed ninth of 24 teams in the Women's Blue Division race at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday.Ā
Led by Anastasia Korzenowski's 24th-placeĀ individual showing in a career-best 16:49.72 for 5K, the Gophers scored 265 points. Minnesota'sĀ top five runners all came in among the top 72 overall in a field of 168 finishers. Jaycie Thomsen, Abby Kohut-Jackson, Zetta Mason, and Olivia Hummel rounded out the top five for the Maroon & Gold.
Utah took home top team honors in the Blue Division race with a team score of 110, followed by runner-up Colorado with 116 pointsĀ and Florida State in third (129 points).
Quotable
"I thought we ran great," head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "When we came in, I thought a top-15 day would be really solid and a top-10 day was kind of the gold standard. To be ninth in this type of field -- it's still early for lots of teams and it was the first big race for a lot of teams, so you don't really know what the rankings mean at this point, but to beat a lot of teams that traditionally have been national caliber teams and are good on paper -- I think that's a really good sign of where we're at. We have hadĀ two really good races back-to-back here, and I think we took another step forward from GriakĀ today. We were really competitive up and down the line. They did exactly what I asked them to do and battled the whole way, and we came away with a pretty good result."
