Preview: Gophers Pack the Pool against B1G Rival Wisconsin
11/5/2019 11:30:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving
The Minnesota swimming & diving program hosts Big Ten rival Wisconsin in its annual Pack the Pool meet this Friday, Nov. 8. Events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
"It's always a fun battle when Minnesota and Wisconsin meet and this year should be no different," said head coach Kelly Kremer. "We are looking forward to our fans packing the pool and the opportunity to compete against the Badgers."
PACKING THE POOL
As this year's designated "Pack the Pool" meet, all students who attend will receive a free Gopher Swimming & Diving fanny pack along with free admission into Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. All fans will also have the opportunity to grab a free 2019-20 team poster.
Also included in the evening festivities against Wisconsin, Goldy Gopher will be in attendance and tasked with livening up the crowd throughout the duration of the meet.
COMING HOME
Friday's dual will mark the Gophers' first home action since their season opener against Florida on Oct. 11. Since then, Minnesota has traveled to Tallahassee, Fla. and Iowa City, Iowa for matchups with Florida State and the Big Ten rival Hawkeyes.
While the men were unable to secure a victory in the aforementioned meets, the women are coming off a strong road win in Iowa. Following the conclusion of the Wisconsin dual, the Gophers will be home once again in their next scheduled action, although that will not come until the Minnesota Invite from Dec. 4-8.
LAST TIME OUT
Minnesota is coming off a quiet weekend after splitting a Big Ten road dual with Iowa two weeks back. In Iowa City, the Gopher women recorded their first victory of the young season, topping Iowa by a score of 157-143.
Although the men's team turned in their best performance of the season, they ultimately fell short against the Hawkeyes, 144-156.
IN THE RANKINGS
Heading into Friday's meeting with Wisconsin, the Minnesota men and women both find themselves ranked in the nation's top-25 poll, as voted on by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). While the Gopher women currently possess the no. 22 spot in the country, the men are not far behind, as they occupy the no. 25 ranking.
As for the Maroon and Gold's border rivals, neither Badger squad is presently ranked within the CSCAA top-25. Wisconsin's men's team does enter Friday's dual having received votes in the latest poll.
SERIES HISTORY
Dating back through the 2010-11 season, both Minnesota teams hold a 6-3 series advantage over Wisconsin. The Badgers did manage to sweep the Gophers last year in Madison, however, as they won 130-170 on the men's side and 143-157 on the women's end.
A LOOK AT THE WISCONSIN WOMEN
The Badgers also enter Friday's dual after being free of competition last weekend. Their last time out, the Wisconsin women fell to Virginia in Charlottesville, 120-192. Having beaten Green Bay, 212-82 on Oct. 4, Wisconsin sits at an even 1-1 prior to their meeting with the Gophers.
THE TAKE ON THE BADGER MEN
After losing to Virginia, 124-193 two weeks ago, the Badger men's team has experienced a similar fate this season. At 1-1, Wisconsin earned their sole win of the season against Green Bay as well, dominating the dual with a 219-74 victory.
HEARING FROM SENIOR TEVYN WADDELL
On the upcoming matchup against Wisconsin…
"The focus for this team right now is staying healthy. Getting sleep, eating right and doing what we need to do to be 100% for Wisconsin. Other than that, just keeping our training like it is and swimming hard like we usually do."
GOPHERS NOTCHING MULTIPLE VICTORIES
Two weekends ago against Iowa, five Gophers hauled in multiple individual victories. Senior All-American Tevyn Waddell led the charge, winning three individual events (100 back, 500 free, 200 IM) in addition to powering the 200 medley relay team to a first place finish.
Cameron Kelley, Lindsey Kozelsky, Max McHugh and Gavin Olson all won two individual events, as the latter three swimmers also helped secure victories in their respective 200 medley relay races.
B1G ACCOLADES APPLENTY
For the first time since Feb. 6 of last season, Minnesota earned a total of three separate weekly Big Ten Conference awards on Oct. 30. McHugh and Waddell were each named Big Ten Swimmers of the Week for their performances against Iowa, while Olson received Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
McHugh was also in on this feat when it was last achieved on Feb. 6, albeit as the Freshman of the Week. Seniors Chantal Nack and Bowen Becker rounded out that group as the two Swimmers of the Week.
IN THE DIVING WELL - WOMEN
Although newcomers Jaclynn Fowler and Jae Sarkis have been the heart of the women's diving group thus far, the duo welcomed a new face to the contributing ranks two weekends back. Freshman Joy Zhu broke out in a big way against Iowa, securing second place in the one-meter with a score of 302.20 and fourth place in the three-meter with a 307.10 total. Both of Zhu's scores were high enough to qualify for NCAA Diving Zones.
Fowler also dived well in Iowa City, placing first in the three-meter with an NCAA Diving Zones qualifying score of 347.20. This aforementioned trio of Gopher divers will likely dictate how well the team performs in the diving well against Wisconsin.
IN THE DIVING WELL – MEN
The Gopher men's diving group is highlighted by a healthy mix of youth and experience. Freshman Jake Butler won his third diving event of the season against Iowa, taking the three-meter with an NCAA Diving Zones qualifying score of 360.10. Butler swept the diving events against Florida on Oct. 11, as the newcomer has quickly proven himself capable of keeping up with the best divers in the country.
As for the experience, senior diving captain Jeremy Moser remains a key component to Minnesota's success in the diving well. Competing against the Hawkeyes, Moser finished second in both the one-meter and three-meter with NCAA Diving Zones qualifying scores of 331.60 and 339.00.
LOOKING AHEAD
With nearly one month until their next official competition in the pool after Wisconsin, the Maroon and Gold will return to action from Dec. 4-8, when they host the Minnesota Invite at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
"It's always a fun battle when Minnesota and Wisconsin meet and this year should be no different," said head coach Kelly Kremer. "We are looking forward to our fans packing the pool and the opportunity to compete against the Badgers."
