11/8/2019 7:14:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota swimming & diving program came up short in a Big Ten Conference meet against Wisconsin Friday evening, as both the men's and women's teams dropped decisions to the Badgers.
It came down to the very end for the Gopher women before Wisconsin was able to hold on for a late victory via a 155-145 score. On the men's side, the Badgers prevailed by a score of 177-123.
Women | Gophers 145 – Badgers 155
The dual started strong right out of the gate for the Gophers, as the women's 200 medley relay team of Emily Cook, Lindsey Kozelsky, Tevyn Waddell and Maggie Summit secured a first place finish (1:39.89).
As is the norm for the All-American senior, Kozelsky hauled in two individual first place finishes for the Maroon and Gold as well. Touching first in both the 100 breast (59.77) and 200 breast (2:12.36), Kozelsky remained undefeated in Big Ten action in both events this season. Kozelsky's time in the 100 breast currently ranks as the third fastest time in the nation so far this season.
Summit, another member of the 200 medley team, also finished first in an individual event for Minnesota. In the 50 free, the freshman touched first with a time of 23.37.
One of the biggest highlights of the night for Minnesota occurred in the diving well. Freshman Joy Zhu swept the women's diving events, taking first in both the one-meter (316.20) and three-meter (320.10). The pair of first place scores mark Zhu's first wins as a collegiate diver.
In the one-meter, freshman Jaclynn Fowler came in second (287.33), while sophomore Jae Sarkis placed fourth (247.70). Sarkis also finished third in the three-meter with a score of 297.08, with Fowler close behind with a fourth place score of 288.68.
Men | Gophers 123 – Badgers 177
Although the Gopher men did not get the result they were looking for, there were still several bright spots on Friday night. Minnesota began the meet with a two-three-four-five finish in the men's 200 medley relay, with the top team featuring the likes of Gavin Olson, Max McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Matthew Thomas.
Sophomore All-American McHugh also notched individual victories in both the 100 breast (52.59) and 200 breast (1:56.41) for the second consecutive meet. In the 100 breast, McHugh logged the nation's fastest time so far this season, while registering the country's third fastest time in the 200 breast. Senior Justin Torres touched the wall behind McHugh in the 200 breast, finishing third with a time of 2:03.30.
McHugh was not the only Gopher to win multiple events, as junior Cameron Kelley placed first in both the 500 free and 1000 free (9:16.06). Sophomore Aidan Dillon finished behind Kelley in each event, placing fourth and third, respectively.
In the diving well, freshman Jake Butler came through with a win in the one-meter (348.53). Butler also delivered Minnesota's top mark in the three-meter, as his 347.18 score was good for second place.
Senior Jeremy Moser and junior Duncan Lester placed behind Butler in both events. Moser earned two fourth place finishes, while Lester placed fifth in both the one-meter and three-meter.
