Gophers Primed for Winter Diving Nationals

12/18/2019 11:31:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

From Dec. 17-22, the 2019 USA Diving Winter National Championships will be held in Minneapolis at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Four Gophers are set to compete in the event: Sarah Bacon, freshman Jake Butler, freshman Jaclynn Fowler and Kristen Hayden.

In addition to those participants, recent signee and soon-to-be Gopher, Megan Phillip, will also be diving at Winter Nationals. As for Bacon and Hayden, the two are not competing for Minnesota this year while training for the 2020 Olympics, but will play a part in representing the U nonetheless.

Both Butler and Fowler are in the midst of standout rookie campaigns for the Maroon and Gold. Butler has already notched four first place finishes across various dual meets this season, most recently placing second in the three-meter (362.90) and third in the one-meter (298.30) in the star-packed Minnesota Invite. Meanwhile, Fowler won the three-meter (347.20) against Iowa, with four additional top-three finishes to her credit so far this season as well.

On Wednesday, Fowler and Phillip will compete in the synchronized women's three-meter as diving partners. Bacon will also partake in the event with Texas alum Kassidy Cook as her partner. Back in August, the duo won a silver medal in the same event at the Pan American Games.

Of course, Bacon's synchronized diving performance was just one highlight from a terrific summer, as she also took gold in the one-meter at the Pan Am Games with a score of 284.10.

As for the current Gophers, Butler will compete in the men's one-meter (Dec. 21) and three-meter (Dec. 19, Dec. 21) at Winter Diving Nationals. In addition to her appearance in the synchronized three-meter, Fowler will also be in the women's one-meter (Dec. 22) diving competition.
