MINNEAPOLIS ā The 2019 USA Diving Winter National Championships concluded over the weekend, as several divers with Minnesota ties turned in notable performances in the well.
Ā
Last week, Sarah Bacon claimed the gold medal in the women's synchronized three-meter alongside partner Kassidy Cook. In the event finals, the duo posted a score of 609.69, while being the only pair to score more than 65 points on all three optional dives.
Ā
As a result of the performance, Bacon effectively punched her ticket to this April's FINA World Cup in Tokyo. The World Cup will be the final opportunity for divers to qualify for a spot in the 2020 Olympic Games.
Ā
In addition to her gold medal, Bacon also qualified for finals in the women's three-meter. The Olympic hopeful placed second in prelims (335.25) and first in the semi-finals (661.35), before finishing in fourth in the event finals with a score of 933.15.
Ā
Kristen Hayden was the only other Gopher to qualify for the three-meter finals, doing so by posting scores of 265.90 in prelims and 543.85 in semi-finals.
Ā
Recent signee and soon-to-be Gopher, Megan Phillip, also competed in the event, qualifying for semi-finals after diving her way to a 229.25 score in prelims.
Ā
Phillip also competed in the women's one-meter, as did current freshman Jaclynn Fowler. The latter Gopher qualified for finals after delivering a preliminary score of 227.75. In the one-meter finals, Fowler placed sixth with a 469.90 score.
Ā
With Winter Diving Nationals now in the rearview, Gopher divers shift their attention to the upcoming University of Tennessee Diving Invite, scheduled for Jan. 3-5 in Knoxville, Tenn.
