Gophers Win 18 Titles at SDSU

Members of the Gophers track & field team opened the 2020 season at the SDSU Holiday Invite & Multi on Friday.
BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The University of Minnesota won 18 event titles as members of the Golden Gophers track & field team opened the 2020 season at the SDSU Holiday Invite & Multi on Friday.
The Gopher women took home nine event titles and currently lead the competition with 180.50 points while the men added nine titles and find themselves in first place with 151 points.Ā
Women's Track Highlights
Akilah Lewis (60-meter dash), Amira Young (200-meter dash), Janielle Josephs (400-meter dash), and Val Larson (600-meter run) led the way on the track as the Gopher women swept the sprints and took home top honors in the 4x400-meter relay to come home with five event crowns on the track.Ā
Young moved into second among all-time Gophers with a winning time of 24.01 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Lewis debuted at ninth on Minnesota's all-time list with a winning time of 7.53 seconds in the 60-meter dash while Josephs won the 400-meter dash in 55.37 seconds, just shy of Minnesota's all-time top-10 list. Larson clocked a time of 1:32.21 to win the 600 meters.
Minnesota's 4x400-meter relay team of Larson, Jayla Campbell, Rachel Schow, and Josephs won in 3:47.67. Campbell finished as 400-meter runner-up (55.38) and Schow was third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.67) as well.
Lexi Romero posted career-best times in both the 60-meter dash (7.58 seconds) and 200-meter dash (24.61 seconds) as runner-up in each event, and Molly Roach led six Gophers in the 800-meter run with a runner-up finish and career-best time of 2:16.22.
Women's Field Highlights
The Minnesota women picked up four event titles in the field events. Nayoka Clunis won both shot put (17.05m) and weight throw (21.07m, 69-01.50) to lead the women's throws. Her shot put mark moved her into second among all-time Gophers and set meet and facility records, and Tess Keyzers placed second in shot put with a PR of 16.55m (54-03.50) and also came in third in weight throw (18.50m, 60-08.25).
Lorean Murray won triple jump with a mark of 11.81 meters (38-09) and came in fourth in long jump (5.50m, 18-00.50).
The Gophers went one-two in the pentathlon as Ayesha Champagnie won withĀ 3,934 points to move into third in Minnesota history and Hannah ArasonĀ finished as runner-up with 3,683 points. Champagnie won theĀ 60-meter hurdles (8.54 seconds) and the shot put (13.23m, 43-04.75) while Arason won high jump (1.72m, 5-07.75) and the 800-meter run (2:27.12). Champagnie also moved up Minnesota's all-time list in the 60m hurdles, climbing to fourth in program history.
Men's Field Highlights
For the men's field events, the Maroon & Gold picked up five event titles including a pair of top-10 all-time performances.Ā
Jon Nerdal led a 23-point performance for the Maroon & Gold by besting his personal record to 21.15 meters (69-04.75 ft.). Nerdal remains eighth all-time at Minnesota in the discipline. Kieran McKeag finished as the runner-up while Kaleb Siekmeier was fourth.Ā
Mason Roomes, meanwhile, jumped into 10th all-time at Minnesota in the men's long jump with his winning performance of 7.33 meters (24-00.50 ft.).Ā
Additionally, the Gophers finished first and second in the men's shot put with Jonathan Tharaldsen leading the way at 18.88 meters (61-11.25 ft.) and newcomer Kevin Nedrick coming in second at 18.29 meters (60-00.00 ft.).
The Gophers also picked up field event wins from Sammie Houston in the triple jump (15.21 meters, 49-10.75 ft.) and newcomer Michael Burke in the high jump (2.15 meters, 7-00.75 ft.).
Men's Track Highlights
On the track, the Gopher men added four titles, led by a 26-point showing in the 600 meters as Ben Psicihulis won at 1:18.56 while Josh Tracy finished second, Grant Fuller came in fourth and Collin Sieffert finished sixth.Ā
Minnesota added another 18 points in the 800 meters thanks to a 1-2 finish from Shane Streich at 1:52.43 and Luke Trapp at 1:53.55 while Jackson Wellenstein picked up a first-place finish in the 400 meters at 49.20.Ā
The Maroon & Gold closed out the night with a win in the men's 4x400 meter relay as Psicihulis, Wellenstein, Tracy and Sieffert clocked a victorious time of 3:16.91.Ā
