Women's Tennis Hits the Road Against Memphis, Mizzou
2/14/2019 12:30:00 PM | Tennis
Seeking revenge from last season's 4-3 heartbreakers to both Missouri and Memphis, the Golden Gophers' women's tennis team heads down south, Feb. 16-17, 2019, to take on both squads in Memphis, Tenn.
"We have three straight weeks on the road and our first two match-ups are against Memphis and Missouri who last year we lost two, tight 4-3 battles that came down to the wire," head coach Catrina Thompson said. "I think we've improved a lot and we have made a lot of adjustments throughout the start of the spring, so we are looking forward to getting on the road."
Who Is Traveling
Eight members will represent the Gophers in Tennessee which include: Cammy Frei, River Hart, Tiffany Huber, Tina Kreinis, Bita Mancera, Caitlyn Merzbacher, Camila Vargas and Juliet Zhang. Zhang has recently returned to the lineup while playing out of the No. 6 singles position throughout the second half of last week's doubleheader while also pairing up with Mancera in No. 3 doubles. However, sophomore Hart has become a staple in the lineup with big wins out of the No. 6 spot prior to Zhang's return.
What To Expect
With many returning back from pestering injuries, Coach Thompson has shown depth in the Gophers' lineup in recent match-ups. Most notably, Frei has seen action in No. 4 singles which was previously home to senior, Merzbacher. Be on the lookout for shuffling lineups throughout the road series as the Gophers look to garner consistency in the bottom half of the roster.
Across The Map
After a weekend-long escapade to the southern United States, the Gophers return north in their first Big Ten match-up with neighboring rival, Wisconsin. Alongside the Badgers, the Gophers will rematch with the University of Utah who downed the Gophers last year in the Courtside Classic at Baseline Tennis Center. Following their brief stop in Madison, Gopher women's tennis will wrap up the last third of their six-match road streak in Houston when they take on Rice and Denver.
