'U' Hosts Notre Dame for Final Big Ten Series

2/20/2019 6:53:00 PM | Men's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gopher Hockey program opens up a four-game home stand this weekend with its final regular-season Big Ten series of the year, hosting No. 16 Notre Dame at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Friday's series opener is slated for 8 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network while Saturday's finale is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT on FOX Sports North.

Burke, Reedy Named Earn Big Ten Weekly Honors
Freshman forward Nathan Burke was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week while sophomore forward Scott Reedy was tabbed as the Big Ten Third Star of the Week. Burke tied for the Big Ten lead with four points (two goals, two assists) last weekend in Minnesota's sweep at Ohio State including his first career three-point game on Friday night (the Gophers are 3-0-0 this year when the rookie has a multi-point performance). Meanwhile, Reedy snapped a 13-game point drought with goals in back-to-back games in the series including the game-winning, power-play goal on Friday night. The Gophers are 3-0-0 this year when Reedy notches a goal and 4-0-0 when he picks up a point. Minnesota has now had 10 different players earn Big Ten honors this year.

Zuhlsdorf Snaps Goal Drought
Junior defenseman Ryan Zuhlsdorf snapped a 99-game goal drought last Friday dating back to Oct. 9, 2016-- a stretch that extended back to Zuhlsdorf's first series with Minnesota as a freshman. The defensemen scored in his first two college games and then struck at the perfect time on Friday. The Gophers are 3-0-0 all-time when Zuhlsdorf scores a goal. In 103 career games, Zuhlsdorf has 19 points (three goals, 16 assists).

Against Notre Dame
The Maroon & Gold enter this weekend's series with a 29-18-3 all-time record against Notre Dame after sweeping a pair two games from the Irish (5-1, 2-1) last month on the road. Minnesota is 18-9-2 against the Irish at home. Senior forward Tyler Sheehy leads all active Gophers with five points (all assists) in nine career games against Notre Dame while sophomore forward Brannon McManus is the team's active leading goal scorer against Notre Dame with three in six games. In net, Mat Robson is 3-1-0 in four games against the Irish while Eric Schierhorn is 1-4-0 in five games.

The Pitlick Production
Junior forward Rem Pitlick extended his career-best scoring streak to 13 games entering the weekend and has now recorded points in 21 of the last 22 games for Minnesota. The Nashville Predators prospect became the 84th Gopher Hockey player to record 100 career points last Saturday and has found the scoresheet in 26 of Minnesota's 31 games this year (he has not been held without a point in back-to-back games this season). Pitlick's team-leading 17 goals rank tied for first in the Big Ten and tied for sixth in the nation while his team-high 37 points are tied for sixth in the nation (both statistics are single-season career highs for the junior).

Sheehy Continues to Climb Record Book
Gopher Hockey senior captain Tyler Sheehy ranks second among active NCAA skaters with 144 points (55 goals, 89 assists) in 142 career games. The Hobey Baker Award nominee is now tied for 33rd all-time at Minnesota in scoring with Hobey Baker Award winner Jordan Leopold (Sheehy's next target is Trent Klatt at 146 points). The seniors 21 power-play points this year are tied for most in the NCAA.

Gopher Hockey Notes & Anecdotes
Last weekend, Minnesota Duluth announced it will host the 2020 Ice Breaker Tournament at AMSOIL Arena with the Gophers joining the Bulldogs along with Minnesota State and Providence...senior defenseman Jack Sadek now has points in four of the last five games and six of the last nine. His fourth goal of the year last Friday tied his single-season high from 2015-16 while his 15 points this year are a career high...the Gophers scored four goals on just 16 shots last Saturday at Ohio State (the team's lowest shot total in 2019). Minnesota is 1-1-2 this season when recording 20 or fewer shots on goal with three of the four games coming against the Buckeyes...senior forward Brent Gates Jr. needs one point to tie his single-season career high of 26 from 2017-18...junior defenseman Tyler Nanne is in a similar position -- one point will tie his single-season career high of 10 from 2017-18.

Hobey Baker Fan Voting
Rem Pitlick, Mat Robson and Tyler Sheehy will represent the Gophers on this year's Hobey Baker Award fan ballot with fan voting currently open for college hockey's top honor. Fans can vote online at HobeyBaker.com through Sunday, March 10. The Gophers have previously won four Hobey Baker Awards (Neal Broten, Robb Stauber, Brian Bonin and Jordan Leopold).

Gophers Honor 1979 Team with 3MAM Record
Saturday. Jan. 26, 2019 was a night to celebrate for two reasons including the 40th anniversary celebration of the University of Minnesota's 1979 national championship squad. With members of the team being honored throughout the game, the Gophers set a new 3M Arena at Mariucci attendance record at 10,686. The crowd topped a 14-year old facility record of 10,587 fans from another Border Battle matchup between Minnesota and Wisconsin on Nov. 6, 2004.

Schierhorn Nears School Record
Senior goaltender Eric Schierhorn (3-4-0) picked up his 12th career shutout earlier this season as the two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year claimed sole possession of third all-time at Minnesota (only Adam Wilcox and Kellen Briggs have more with 13 each). With a 58-45-4 career record, Schierhorn ranks sixth in school history in wins and fifth in saves at 2,699. Schierhorn has made 111 all-time appearances for the Maroon & Gold, fourth in program history behind only Adam Hauser (151), Kellen Briggs (132) and Adam Wilcox (115).

Minnesota Announces Captains for 2018-19
Four senior forwards will serve as leads for the University of Minnesota during the 2018-19 campaign with Tyler Sheehy and Brent Gates Jr. acting as captains for the Maroon & Gold while Jack Ramsey and Darian Romanko will act as assistant captains. Sheehy returns after serving as team captain as a junior last year while Gates, Ramsey and Romanko will wear letters for the first time as seniors. The four skaters continue a long tradition of Gopher Hockey captains dating back to the program's first season of play in 1921-22 when Chet Bros led the Maroon & Gold. Counting the new additions, 170 Gophers have worn a letter at the University of Minnesota in the program's 97-year history.

Gophers in the NHL Draft
Thirteen current Gophers have had their names called at the NHL Entry Draft including newcomers Robbie Stucker (2017, Columbus, Seventh Round, 210th), Sammy Walker (2017, Tampa Bay, Seventh Round, 200th), Blake McLaughlin (2018, Anaheim, Third Round, 79th) and Sampo Ranta (2018, Colorado, Third Round, 78th). Ranta and McLaughlin were selected with back-to-back picks in 2018 -- the sixth time in Gophers history that has happened. Ten NHL teams have prospects on the Gopher Hockey roster this year with Anaheim, Tampa Bay and Nashville each listing two draftees with Minnesota.

Mr. Hockey Goes to Minnesota
Incoming Gophers freshman Sammy Walker closed out his prep career by leading Edina High School to a third-place finish at the 2018 MSHSL Class AA State Tournament, earning all-tournament honors along with Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year accolades. Walker was also 34th recipient of the annual Mr. Hockey Award, given to the top senior high school boy's hockey player in the state of Minnesota. Of the 34 honorees in the award's history, 23 have gone on to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota.

Success in the Classroom
The spring semester started last month (Jan. 22) at Minnesota, but the fall semester was unforgettable as the Gophers recorded the highest semester GPA in program history at 3.41 and the highest cumulative GPA in program history at 3.22. As an athletic department, Minnesota followed suit with school records of 3.25 cumulative GPA and a 3.25 semester GPA.
