Meet Preview: Gophers Face ASU, UMN Club at Home

Video Preview: Burns Turn 2/5

The Minnesota men's gymnastics team will return to Maturi Pavilion this weekend fresh off of a first place finish and looking for another pair of wins.

The No. 4 Gophers host the No. 14 Arizona State Sun Devils and the University of Minnesota Club Team for a tri-meet Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2:30 p.m. The meet is one of four at home for Minnesota and its only one in February.

"Competing in front of our home crowd is always advantageous. We get to sleep in our beds, we don't have to travel and get the van or the bus, so there's a lot of comfort to it," head coach Mike Burns. "But [ASU] is coming from Tempe, Ariz. where the temperature is 82 degrees ... Here we've got snow and ice and rain and wind and cold, and we're going to greet them with Minnesota weather. It'll be great."

The Gophers are coming off of a strong performance at Iowa on Feb. 2 that saw them capture their first team victory of the season and set new highs on floor and rings. Minnesota also swept the event titles on the day, highlighted by three for sophomore Shane Wiskus (rings, parallel bars and high bar) in addition to the all-around title. Freshman Eric Nakamura garnered Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after a standout performance on floor that set a new high score for the Gophers and earned him the event title, the first for any Minnesota freshman this year. Seniors Vitali Kan and Justin Karstadt rounded out the titles, the second of the season for each on vault and pommel horse.

Be sure to bring an appetite to this weekend's contest, as it falls on National Pizza Day and all students in attendance will receive free slices while supplies last. It's also Goldy's Kids Club Day at the Pav, and all GKC members can stop by the marketing table to claim their free signed poster! Also, stick around for the end of the meet to participate in the handstand contest on the competition floor. For all home promos and ticket information, be sure to check out the promotions calendar!

Fans keeping up at home can catch the meet on BTN Plus, along with live scoring. Head coach Mike Burns and Eric Nakamura broke down all the action to come this weekend on Tuesday's episode of Burn's Turn, available on Facebook. Follow the Gophers on FacebookTwitter and Instagram for all updates and coverage!

Last Time Out
The Gophers tallied their second-best score of the season with a 406.400 during their tri-meet against Iowa and UIC. The team set new team highs on two areas it has had some trouble with this season: floor (69.250) and rings (67.250). Wiskus led the Gophers on the day and claimed the event titles on rings (13.700), parallel bars (14.350, season high) and high bar (13.550).Seniors Vitali Kan and Justin Karstadt each earned their second event titles of the season on vault (14.750) and pommel horse (13.800), respectively. Nakamura rounded out the event titles for the Gophers as he excelled on floor with a career- and season-high 14.400 for first place. Fellow freshman David Pochinka had three podium finishes on the day: second place on parallel bars (14.000) and two third place plaudits on pommel horse (13.000) and rings (13.550).

Gophers in the Rankings
The Gophers are ranked No. 4 all-around this week and come in at No. 3 on parallel bars, No. 4 on vault, No. 6 on floor, No. 7 on rings and high bar and No. 10 on pommel horse. Karstadt remains No. 5 for the second week in a row, while Kan and Wiskus have both jumped from No. 10 to No. 7 this week on vault and parallel bars, respectively. Wiskus is also ranked No. 7 nationally in the all-around.

The Road Ahead
Most of the team has off next weekend, but Wiskus and senior captain Shaun Herzog will head west to compete in the Winter Cup Feb. 15.17 in Las Vegas, Nev. Preliminary competition will begin at 8:30 p.m. CST on Friday and the finals will kick off at 9:15 p.m. Sunday. Former Gopher NCAA Champion, Big Ten Champion and All-American Ellis Mannon will also compete, along with future Gopher Crew Bold. USA Gymnastics will stream all sessions of the competition live on YouTube. The Gophers get back to team action for a road tri-meet against Nebraska and UIC in Lincoln, Neb. on Feb. 23.

New Year, New Leaders
The Gophers are anchored this season by a brand new set of captains. Chosen by their team and outgoing seniors, junior Timmy Kutyla and seniors Vitali Kan and Shaun Herzog are serving as this year's Gophers leaders. Kan is a two-time All-American on vault and is currently ranked No. 7 on the event, while Herzog had a breakout season last year that saw him finishing with six career-highs and All-American honors on rings. He set season highs in the team's dual meet against Michigan on pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar. Kutyla is the only junior on the team and has scored on parallel bars and high bar in every meet this season.
