MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gopher Hockey program continues the Big Ten Tournament this weekend with a semifinal matchup on the road against No. 16/15 Notre Dame on Saturday, March 16. Puck drop at Compton Family Ice Arena is set for 6 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network.
Gophers Go Streaking
The University of Minnesota enters this weekend's semifinal contest on a five-game winning streak (the program's longest stretch of the season) while winning seven of the last eight contests. The Maroon & Gold's last loss was against the Fighting Irish in a 2-3 loss at 3M Arena at Mariucci on Feb. 22. The Gophers bounced back with a 2-1 win the following night and have since swept Arizona State (5-1, 5-2) to close out the regular season followed by two-straight wins against Michigan last weekend (3-2 in overtime, 4-1) in the Big Ten quarterfinals.
Against the Irish
Pride on Ice owns a 30-19-3 all-time record against the Fighting Irish including winning three of four regular-season matchups in the regular season against Saturday's opponent. In addition to last month's split at 3M Arena at Mariucci, the Gophers swept Notre Dame at Compton Family Ice Arena earlier this season (5-1, 2-1) as three out of four matchups between the two programs have been decided by one goal this season. Senior forward Tyler Sheehy and sophomore forward Brannon McManus lead all active Gophers with five career points each against the Irish.
Walker Named Finalist for Big Ten Freshman of the Year
Minnesota rookie Sammy Walker has been named a finalist for this year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year after leading all Big Ten freshmen with 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists) in his rookie season. The forward has played in all but one of Minnesota's 36 games this year and has recorded points in 15 of the Gophers' 18 two-game series this season. Pride on Ice is 4-0-0 this year when Walker records multiple points including a pair of three-point performances in Big Ten play.
Robson Awarded for Play in Net
Junior goaltender Mat Robson has been named a finalist for the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year after backstopping Minnesota to a 14-11-4 record this season. The junior leads the conference in saves this season (915) while ranking third in the league in save percentage (.920) and wins (14). The goaltender has allowed two goals or fewer in 14 of his 30 starts this year including each of his last four starts (all wins) while he has surrendered just one goal in seven games this year including three of four games against Notre Dame this season. Robson owns a 3-1-0 record against Notre Dame this year with a 1.51 GAA and a .956 save percentage (the junior is 4-2-0 all-time against the Irish).
Motzko Up for Big Ten Coach of the Year
In his first season with the Gophers, Bob Motzko has led the University of Minnesota to a third-place finish in the Big Ten and a berth in the conference semifinals this weekend. With an 18-15-4 overall record, the Maroon & Gold enter this weekend's semifinal on a five-game winning streak and have won seven of the last eight contests. The Gophers own the Big Ten's best penalty kill (.840, 110-for-131) while ranking second in the league in offense (3.16 goals per game) and power play (.241, 33-for-137).
Reedy Reaps Points in Big Ten Playoffs
Sophomore Scott Reedy picked up the game-winning goal and added an assist in Saturday's quarterfinal battle against Michigan for his sixth career multi-point game (the forward has three multi-point performances in four career Big Ten tournament games). Four of Reedy's seven goals this year have been game winners (most among the Gophers and tied for the most in the Big Ten).
McManus Continues Breakout Season
Sophomore forward Brannon McManus is having a breakout year for the Maroon & Gold with 26 points, 14 goals and 12 assists (all career highs). McManus has nearly tripled his freshman point total and has already doubled his freshman goal total (7-2--9).
Pitlick Among Nation's Top Scorers
Junior forward Rem Pitlick scored two goals in Saturday's win for his third multi-point performance in the last four games. Pitlick's 45 points, 21 goals and 24 assists are all career highs while his 21 goals are the most by a Gopher since All-American Nick Bjugstad had 21 in 2012-13. The Predators prospect currently ranks fourth in the nation in scoring while the junior is tied for the NCAA lead in both power-play goals (10) and shorthanded goals (three). Pitlick has points in 31 of 37 games this season.
Sheehy Stays Hot for Minnesota
With two assists last Saturday, senior captain Tyler Sheehy has now recorded 149 points (56 goals, 93 assists) in 148 career games. The forward needs one point to become the 29th Gopher Hockey alum to hit 150 career points (he'll tie Justin Kloos for 28th on Minnesota's all-time scoring list at that point). Sheehy's 24 power-play points this season lead all NCAA players.
Gophers Honor 1979 Team with 3MAM Record
Saturday. Jan. 26, 2019 was a night to celebrate for two reasons including the 40th anniversary celebration of the University of Minnesota's 1979 national championship squad. With members of the team being honored throughout the game, the Gophers set a new 3M Arena at Mariucci attendance record at 10,686. The crowd topped a 14-year old facility record of 10,587 fans from another Border Battle matchup between Minnesota and Wisconsin on Nov. 6, 2004.
Schierhorn Nears School Record
Senior goaltender Eric Schierhorn (4-4-0) picked up his 12th career shutout earlier this season as the two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year claimed sole possession of third all-time at Minnesota (only Adam Wilcox and Kellen Briggs have more with 13 each). With a 59-45-4 career record, Schierhorn ranks sixth in school history in wins and fifth in saves at 2,718. Schierhorn has made 112 all-time appearances for the Maroon & Gold, fourth in program history behind only Adam Hauser (151), Kellen Briggs (132) and Adam Wilcox (115).

Four senior forwards will serve as leads for the University of Minnesota during the 2018-19 campaign with Tyler Sheehy and Brent Gates Jr. acting as captains for the Maroon & Gold while Jack Ramsey and Darian Romanko will act as assistant captains. Sheehy returns after serving as team captain as a junior last year while Gates, Ramsey and Romanko will wear letters for the first time as seniors. The four skaters continue a long tradition of Gopher Hockey captains dating back to the program's first season of play in 1921-22 when Chet Bros led the Maroon & Gold. Counting the new additions, 170 Gophers have worn a letter at the University of Minnesota in the program's 97-year history.

Ranta and McLaughlin were selected with back-to-back picks in 2018 -- the sixth time in Gophers history that has happened. Ten NHL teams have prospects on the Gopher Hockey roster this year with Anaheim, Tampa Bay and Nashville each listing two draftees with Minnesota.
Mr. Hockey Goes to Minnesota
Gophers freshman Sammy Walker closed out his prep career by leading Edina High School to a third-place finish at the 2018 MSHSL Class AA State Tournament, earning all-tournament honors along with Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year accolades.
