3/29/2019 8:24:00 PM | Men's Tennis
STATE COLLEGE, PENN. - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team fell to Big Ten rival Penn State 5-2 Friday. This marks Minnesota's third straight conference loss.
"We knew Penn State would be a tough match, especially at their place," head coach Geoff Young said. "We were a little unlucky to not be able to play outdoors, but I give them credit as they played well."
DOUBLES
The Gophers mixed up doubles partners for this match, with two pairings that haven''t appeared this season, and Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy moving up to the No. 1 spot. However, the change did not work out in Minnesota's favor, as Justyn Levin and Marino Alpeza fell 6-3 in No. 2 doubles, and Allen and Ogilvy fell 6-3 as well in No. 1 doubles. Stefan Milicevic and Josip Krstanovic were leading 5-4 in No. 3 doubles upon clinch.
SINGLES
No. 44 Constant De La Basse put the Nittany lions up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 47 Josip Krstanovic in No. 1 singles, while Marino Alpeza put the Gophers on the board with a 6-4, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles. Penn State clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win in No. 2 singles over Stefan Milicevic and a 6-3, 6-3 win in No. 4 singles over Jackson Allen. Vlad Lobak then defeated Jordan Nickerson 6-1, 6-3 in No. 6 singles, while Eli Ogilvy lost 6-7 (8), 6-3, 10-6 in No. 5 singles
THE SPIN
Minnesota has their work cut out for them moving forward. After a 12-1 start to the season, the Gophers have dropped three straight in Big Ten play, and have yet to play the three highest ranked teams in the conference (Ohio State, Michigan and Illinois). On the other hand, that means there are opportunities to turn their record around with big matches coming up.
