Gophers Fall to No. 4 Oregon State in Pitchers' Duel

3/8/2019 9:13:00 PM | Baseball

The University of Minnesota baseball team (2-9) lost 2-1 to No. 4 Oregon State Friday in the Seattle Baseball Showcase. The Golden Gophers claimed a 1-0 lead in the third before the Beavers (11-1) broke through Max Meyer's strong start with a two-run home run in the sixth. Pitching took center stage at T-Mobile Park as the two teams combined for only eight hits and 24 strikeouts in their second meeting of the season.

The Gophers got on the board in the third thanks to two-out hitting. Outfielder Ben Mezzenga drove a double to the left field gap and scored on first baseman Cole McDevitt's single up the middle.

The right-handed Meyer completed a career-high six innings with a career-high eight strikeouts in his first start on the mound as a Gopher. He allowed four hits and two runs and did not walk any batters.

Meyer was dominant through five innings. He allowed only one hit and had seven strikeouts in the first five frames. To start the sixth, Oregon State's Alex McGarry singled and Adley Rutschman hit a home run to right to put the Beavers up for good 2-1.

Brett Schulze pitched three innings in relief for Minnesota, allowing one hit and tallying three strikeouts. However, the Gopher offense had only one more hit after the run-producing third, a single by catcher and Seattle native Eli Wilson.

Minnesota had two runners on in the fifth as Drew Hmielewski and McDeviit took walks, and Riley Smith and Mezzenga were hit by pitch in the seventh, but the Gophers could not get them across the plate.

Grant Gambrell started for Oregon State and pitched 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and allowed one run and all three of Minnesota's hits. Christian Chamberlain pitched the rest of the game for the win with seven strikeouts.

Minnesota will continue the Seattle Baseball Showcase against San Diego on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT.
