Gophers Set to Face Illinois, Northwestern, for Senior Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis Team will close out the spring season with duals against Illinois and Northwestern at Baseline Tennis Center. Sunday against Northwestern will be Senior Day, where seniors Josip Krstanovic, Jesse Sprinkel, Justyn Levin and Marino Alpeza will be honored for their contributions over the last four years for the Maroon and Gold.
LAST TIME OUT
Minnesota faced a tough opponent in No. 19 Michigan, where the Gophers fell 6-1. Stefan Milicevic earned himself a ranked win along the way, with his win in No. 2 singles over No. 53 Mattias Siimar.
Minnesota fared much better against Michigan State, winning 6-1 with wins across the board in singles. Josip Krstanovic also earned a ranked win, defeating No. 101 Jack Winkler in the No. 1 spot.
WHO'S UP
Minnesota will first take on Illinois Saturday at noon. The No. 15 Illini (14-7, 8-1 Big Ten) are led by No. 8 singles player Aleksandar Kovacevic in the No. 1 spot, a tough, experienced junior from New York City. He is followed up by No. 54 Alex Brown, a strong lefty from Urbandale, Iowa. Doubles play has been key for Illinois as well, with Alex Brown and Caleb Chakravarthi coming in ranked No. 54 and the pairing of Brown and Kovacevic coming in at No. 56.
For Senior Day, Minnesota will face off against Northwester Sunday at 2 pm. The Wildcats (13-12, 4-5 Big Ten) are coming off back-to-back losses to Ohio State and Penn State. Northwestern is led by Dominik Stary, a junior from the Czech Republic, and Antonioni Fasano, a Brazilian Sophomore. The seniors will be honored both before and after the match.
GOPHERS IN THE RANKINGS
As a team, Minnesota came in ranked No. 37, while the Gophers saw improvements in both the singles and doubles rankings. In doubles, Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin came in at No. 88, while Krstanovic is ranked No. 85 in singles play. Stefan Milicevic also entered the singles rankings this week, coming in at No. 123, his first time in the rankings since last fall.
