Gophers fall to No. 1 Ohio State in Big Ten Tournament

4/26/2019 11:37:00 AM | Men's Tennis

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team was eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament Friday by No. 1 Ohio State. Jackson Allen was one point away from a win in No. 4 singles against No. 58 Kyle Seelig upon clinch of the match.

"Ohio State forces us to go for shots that we don't feel comfortable hitting," head coach Geoff Young said. "We need to practice each day going for this amount of depth and pace to be able to sustain the level necessary to beat a team like OSU. Jackson Allen played a great match and I'm happy to see him play good tennis"

DOUBLES

Ohio State got off to an on-brand hot start in doubles, taking No. 2 doubles 6-2 over Stefan Milicevic and Marino Alpeza. Then, Ohio State took No. 1 doubles over Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy, winning 6-4 in a heated matchup. Josip Krstanovic and Sebastian Vile were tied 5-5 in No. 3 doubles upon clinch.

SINGLES

Ohio State touts a stron singles lineup, with three of their players all ranked by ITA in the top 100. The Buckeyes went one-two-three over the Gophers with No. 1 JJ Wolf defeating Josip Krstanovic 6-3, 6-3, No. 24 John McNally defeated Stefan Milicevic 6-1, 6-3, and Martin Joyce defeated Marino Alpeza 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Jackson Allen was leading No. 58 Kyle Seelig 6-3, 6-5 40-15 upon clinch.

"I thought I played pretty well. I was up 6-3, 6-5 40-15 and serving when my opponent ook a medical timeout," Allen said. Unfortunately, I didn't et to officially win the match but I feel like I won and that's what matters."

THE SPIN

As said in Minnesota's last matchup with the Buckeyes, they are incredibly talented. Ohio State has only two losses and is No. 1 in the nation for a reason. Minnesota showed some spark in doubles, inching very close to winning the doubles point with wins in No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Jackson Allen played a great match in No. 4 singles, but did not have the opportunity to finish, while Vlad Lobak and Sebastian Vile had just started their matches. This was a big test, with hopefully more to come in the NCAA Tournament.

I thought we played hard in the tournament," Allen said. "We were firing on all cylinders against Wisconsin and competed well in spots against Ohio State. It's time to get ready for the NCAA Tournament.
