5/3/2019 3:17:00 PM | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team fell 4-1 to San Diego in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament Friday. Vlad Lobak earned the lone point for Minnesota with his 6-4, 6-4 win in No. 5 singles
"It was a tough battle today, we were fighting on every single court but some of us didn't play our best tennis of the season, including me," Senior Josip Krstanovic said. "All in all, I couldn't be more proud of what we've gone through in this season. I don't think a lot of people belived we could beat the teams we beat. I will always be a proud Gopher, and I will never forget this life-changing experience."
DOUBLES
San Diego took control of the match with their play in doubles. Coming in, the pairing of Gamerov and Holmgren were ranked No. 50 in the nation, and defeated Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy 6-2, The Torreros clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win in No. 2 doubles over Josip Krstanovic and Sebastian Vile. Marino Alpeza and Stefan Milicevic were trailing 5-2 upon clinch.
SINGLES
San Diego jumped ahead to a 2-11 lead when Sebastian Vile fell 6-4, 6-3 to Noah Dufort in No. 6 singles. Then, Vlad Lobak earned the lone point for Minnesota with his 6-4, 6-4 win in No. 5 singles, defeating David Norfeldt. Nico Borter defeated Marino Alpeza 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in No. 3 singles before No. 56 Gui Osorio clinched the match for San Diego with his 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-1 win in No. 1 singles over No. 89 Josip Krstanovic. Stefan Milicevic and Jackson Allen both were leading in the third set of their matches upon clinch
THE SPIN
After losing Matic Spec and Felix Corwin to graduation after last year, expectations were murky for the Gophers coming in. Seniors Josip Krstanovic and Marino Alpeza were both pleasant surprises for Minnesota, holding down the upper half of the singles lineup all season with grand consistency. Alpeza even led the team with 24 singles wins over the 2018-2019 season, and both he and Krstanovic improved their games tremendously. Sophomore Jackson Allen improved on his stellar Freshman season, earning 21 wins on the season, primarily in the No. 3 and No. 4 spot. Vlad Lobak came out of the woodwork as a great deep lineup option in his Sophomore campaign, and earned 22 wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 spot. More impressively so, Lobak improved his serve and was a player that could be counted on for his full effort in every match. Freshman Sebastian Vile also proved his worth, becoming immediately valuable as a No. 6 and No.7 guy right out of high school.
UP NEXT
While losing seniors Josip Krstanovic, Marino Alpeza, Justyn Levin and Jesse Sprinkel, the Gophers return four players in the singles and doubles lineups, respectively. Eli Ogilvy and Stefan Milicevic will be seniors, bringing needed experience to the lineup, while mainstays Jackson Allen and Vlad Lobak will return for their junior year hungry for more. Kaleb Dobbs is also returning for his junior season after earning some experience in the Fall tournaments, while Sebastian Vile will look to improve upon his outstanding Freshman year. The Gophers are bringing in four newcomers to the team next season, including Dylan Heap, who spent the spring season as a greyshirt practicing with the squad and attending classes.
"We lost to a very good USD team, but I'm very proud of our guys and how they battled," Head Coach Geoff Young said. "I'll miss this group of seniors. they're awesome people who gave so much to this program and I'm very grateful."
