Gophers End Four Match Losing Streak with 6-1 Win Over Purdue

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team took down Purdue 6-1 at home Friday. Minnesota broke a four match losing skid with the win.

Head coach Geoff Young gives his thoughts on the win over Purdue #Gophers pic.twitter.com/LHSpkIxAnz
— Minnesota Men's Tennis (@GopherMTennis) April 6, 2019

DOUBLES

The Gophers mixed some things up with Justyn Levin out of the lineup. Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy were slotted in the No. 1 spot, but fell 6-2. But, the No. 2 and No. 3 spots held true as Josip Krstanovic and Sebastian Vile took No. 3 doubles 6-3 and Marino Alpeza and Stefan Milicevic took No. 2 doubles 6-3 as well.

SINGLES

Josip Krstanovic fell first to Athell Bennett 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles, allowing the Boilermakers to tie the match up at 1-1. But, the rest of the match was all Gophers. Marino Alpeza took No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-2 while Stefan Milicevic won No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2. Then, Eli Ogilvy clinched the match for Minnesota with a 6-4, 6-3 win in No. 5 singles. Moments later, Sebastian Vile took No. 6 singles 7-6, 6-2, while Jackson Allen book ended the match with a 7-5, 7-5 win in No. 4 singles.

THE SPIN

Minnesota finally got back on track with this win over Purdue. The Gophers channeled their early season form with this win, and took it with some unlikely help. With stalwart doubles player Justyn Levin out with a shoulder injury and Vlad Lobak out with illness, freshman Sebastian Vile stepped in and didn't miss a beat in No. 3 doubles or No. 6 singles. Vile has experience from earlier in the season, but has mostly slotted in at the No. 7 spot on the bench, and the freshman looked poised coming into a key Big Ten match late in the season.

Sebastian Vile earned a 7-6, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles.
