5/2/2019 6:14:00 PM | Men's Tennis

LOS ANGELES - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team will face San Diego in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at noon. The winner will face either Southern Cal or Northern Arizona in the Second Round, Saturday at 1 pm.

LAST TIME OUT.

Minnesota fared well with a 4-0 sweep of rival Wisconsin in the first round of the Big ten Tournament, winning 4-0. Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy earned a ranked win in No. 1 doubles, while Allen, Josip Krstanovic and Vlad Lobak rounded out the remaining points for the win. Minnesota then ran into No. 1 Ohio State in the second round, and fell 4-0. Jackson Allen was one point away from a win in No. 4 singles upon Ohio State's clinch.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO

The Torreros (20-4, 8-1 WCC) earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament by winning the West Coast Conference Tournament with wins over Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara. They are led by No. 50 ranked pairing of Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren in doubles, while Gui Osorio leads the way in singles, ranked No. 56. Holmgren also appears in the rankings at the No. 103 spot.

GOPHERS IN THE RANKINGS

Josip Krstanovic has been a mainstay in the singles rankings this season, coming in at No. 89 in the nation, while he and teammate Justyn Levin are coming in at No. 79 in doubles.

THE SPIN

While San Diego does not see the same type of competition in conference play as Minnesota, the Torreros did face some tough non-conference teams. San Diego also has a top-heavy lineup with a lot of talent, giving them the edge in the top spots in singles and doubles. For Minnesota to be successful, they will have to rely on their depth at the bottom of the lineup, with players like the ever-reliable Marino Alpeza coming up strong.
