A Look Back at the 2018-19 Season

With the summer coming to a close and the University of Minnesota Men's Tennis 2019-20 fall season right around the corner, let's take a look back at what the Gophers accomplished over the course of last year.

2018 Fall Season

The fall season provided a jam packed opening round of tournaments for the Gophers, as players were sent to Malibu, Milwaukee, and Princeton to take part in the Gophers' first slate of fall matches. Stefan Milicevic made noise early, reaching the mixed doubles semifinal at the Oracle ITA Masters tournament. Sebastian Vile started his Gophers career with a bang by logging his first two collegiate victories in singles play at the Ivy Plus Invitational. Gophers senior Justyn Levin rounded out the busy opening weekend for the team by logging a pair of singles wins at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Three weeks later, the team sent a trio of Gophers to Tulsa, Oklahoma to take part in the ITA Central Regional tournament. Senior Josip Krstanovic was able to reach the Round of 16 for his second consecutive season in the Central Region. Stefan Milicevic, who had taken part in the ITA All-American singles tournament in Tulsa just a week prior, fell to the eventual tournament champion in the tournament's quarterfinals. And finally underclassman Jackson Allen made a deep tournament run by reaching the semifinals. During his tournament run, Allen would go on to defeat three regionally seeded opponents and the No. 16 singles player in the nation. The Gophers capped off their fall season by hosting their annual Gopher Invitational tournament at Baseline Tennis Center. It was Gopher upperclassmen Justyn Levin and Eli Ogilvy who came out on top as the tournament's champions. Over the course of the weekend, Levin had a flawless 8-0 combined singles and doubles record, which helped lead the pair to their tournament victory.

2019 Spring Season

During the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in late January, the Gophers showcased that they were poised to make some noise in the coming season, taking down Central Florida 4-3. In their early season victory, the Gophers found themselves winning three separate ranked singles matches over UCF, with Josip Krstanovic, Stefan Milicevic, and Marino Alpeza each taking down a ranked opponent. The following match, the Gophers were able to continue their hot start by taking down the No. 19 ranked team in the nation, Alabama, on the road. Following their upset win over Alabama, the Maroon & Gold would go on to win their next eight matches, holding an impressive 12-1 team record, with their only loss coming against Oregon in January. Despite suffering a handful of losses in Big Ten play later in the season, the Gophers still put together a final team record of 16-10. In the Big Ten tournament, the 8th-seeded Gophers took down rival Wisconsin to advance to play Ohio State, where the Gophers ultimately fell. With their Big Ten tournament win over Wisconsin, the Gophers proved worthy of an NCAA Tournament bid, and were set to play in their third consecutive NCAA Tournament under Coach Geoff Young. Matched up against the University of San Diego in the opening round, the Gophers fought to earn another upset victory, but ultimately found themselves falling to the Toreros 1-4. Take a look back at some of the team's accomplishments and achievements over the past season, as this chapter in Gophers Men's Tennis comes to a close.
