HAWAII HAPPENINGS
Since Dec. 31, Minnesota swimmers have been in Honolulu, Hawaii for the team's annual training trip. During their stay on the island of Oahu, the Gophers have been training thoroughly at the University of Hawaii through a series of workouts in the pool, ocean and weight room – as well as on the flatland.
Although the stay also served as an opportunity for many Gophers to explore the island, it was also a business trip as Minnesota swam against Hawaii in a Jan. 11 dual meet.
LAST TIME OUT
Competing in their first dual meet since early November, the Gophers shook off the rust and came away with an impressive sweep of the Rainbow Warriors in Honolulu. For the men, Minnesota's 133-129 victory marked their 12th in a row against Hawaii, as they remained undefeated against the Rainbow Warriors dating back to the 2008-09 season.
On the women's side, the Gophers' 178-84 defeat of Hawaii signified their ninth straight win over their island foe. Minnesota's win streak goes back through the 2011-12 season for the women's team.
DOUBLE-DIGIT FIRST PLACE FINISHES
Overall, 10 different Gophers swam their way to at least one first place finish against Hawaii: Grace Bennin, Rachel Butler, Cameron Kelley, Abbey Kilgallon, Lindsey Kozelsky, Jordan McGinty, Max McHugh, Kate Sullivan, Matthew Thomas and Tevyn Waddell.
Five Minnesota swimmers registered multiple first place finishes at the meet, led by Kelley with three (200 free, 500 free, 1000 free). Kozelsky (100 breast, 200 breast), McGinty (100 free, 200 free), McHugh (100 breast, 200 breast) and Waddell (100 back, 200 back) rounded out the group.
TAKING A DIVE
With the swimmers in Hawaii, Gopher divers remained within the contiguous United States. Their most recent competition took place from Jan. 3-5 at the Tennessee Diving Invitational.
Over the course of the three-day event, sophomore Joy Zhu collected wins in both the 1-meter (313.55) and 3-meter springboard (365.85). This signified Zhu's third sweep of the springboard events in 2018-19, having also accomplished the feat against Wisconsin (Nov. 8) and at the Minnesota Invite (Dec. 4-7)
Other Minnesota divers who qualified for finals in Tennessee were Jaclynn Fowler and Jake Butler. Fowler finished fourth overall in the women's 1-meter finals (272.20), while Butler placed second in the 1-meter (314.80) and fourth in the 3-meter (355.90).
IN THE RANKINGS
Entering Friday's meet against USC, Minnesota's men and women remain at the same positions as last week in the CSCAA TYR Top 25 rankings. The Gopher women currently find themselves ranked at No. 24 in the nation, while the men were acknowledged in the receiving votes section.
As for USC, the Trojans come in with a No. 20 ranked men's team and a No. 9 ranked women's squad.
A LOOK AT USC
The USC men head into Friday's meet with a 0-2 record so far this season. Back in November, the Trojans dropped a pair of road duals to Arizona State (109-184) and Arizona (119-179). This weekend's meet will be the first of the 2020 dual season for the Trojan men.
On the women's end of the spectrum, USC boasts a 4-0 record on the year. Already in 2019-20, the Trojan women have defeated Utah (143-111), Arizona State (184-113), Arizona (174-124) and Washington State (155-102).
SERIES HISTORY
In the last ten seasons, these two programs have only faced off on one occasion. That came in January of the 2018-19 season, when the Gophers made a similar stop in Los Angeles on their way back from Hawaii.
At last year's dual meet, the Gophers came up short on both sides. The men suffered a 109-153 defeat, while the women fell, 114-146. As a result, Minnesota will arrive in South California looking to even the score via a road sweep of the Trojans.
