'U' Brings Home Seven Event Titles, Women's Team Title from Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Minnesota track & field program closed out competition at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Saturday with the women earning the team title at the event while the men finished second.Â
The Maroon & Gold combined for seven individual titles (four men's event wins, three women's event wins) with the women totaling 148 points and the men totaling 94.50 points.Â
Women's Recap
While Val Larson (women's premier 600 meters) and Erin Dunning (women's premier weight throw) picked up titles for the Gophers on Friday, Sophie Schmitz added to the point total on Saturday with a win in the women's premier 800 meters. Schmitz recorded a personal record of 2:10.05 while the Gophers picked up a total of 25 points in the race towards the team total.Â
After setting a new Gophers record in the women's 200 meters on Friday, Amira Young posted the second fastest 60-meter dash time in Maroon & Gold history on Saturday. Young finished as the runner-up with a time of 7.38 seconds while Akilah Lewis tied for the sixth-fastest time in school history at 7.47 seconds, finishing sixth, and Octavia Cato moved into a tie for 10th in Minnesota history with a time of 7.56 seconds in the preliminary heats.
Additionally, Lorean Murray was the runner-up in the women's triple jump after hitting an indoor personal record of 12.39 meters (40-07.75 ft.) -- good enough for seventh all-time for the Maroon & Gold. Ayesha Champagnie also improved her mark among all-time Gophers with a preliminary time of 8.47 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, good for fourth in Minnesota history; she finished sixth in the final (8.58 seconds).
Men's Recap
After picking up event titles from Michael Burke (men's high jump) and Evan Ferlic (men's 3,000 meters) on Friday, the Maroon & Gold added two more event titles on the men's side to close up shop in Iowa City on Saturday.Â
For the second-straight year, the Gophers broke the Larry Wieczorek Invitational record in the men's 800 meter premier as Dawson LaRance ran 1:50.00 to top Shane Streich's record at the meet from 2019. LaRance's performance matched his personal best (which stands 10th all-time at the University of Minnesota) while it also broke the facility record of Penn State's Joseph Loner (1:50.87 in 1997). Meanwhile, Streich also bested his performance from last year, clocking a 1:50.56 to finish third in the race on Saturday.Â
The Maroon & Gold also repeated the back-to-back meet record performance in the men's one mile as Nick Rink came across the finish line at 4:11.33. Jordan MacIntosh set the Larry Wieczorek Invitational record in the mile in 2019.Â
Additionally, Jack Manderscheid finished third in the men's 3,000 meter premier with a time of 8:09.76 -- the performance moves Manderscheid into 10th all-time at the University of Minnesota in the 3,000 meters.Â
Sammie Houston, meanwhile, already owned the No. 7 slot in the Maroon & Gold's all-time top 10 for the men's triple jump but Houston's fourth-place finish came with a new personal record of 15.39 meters ( 50-06.00 ft.). Â
