Gophers Claim Six Titles in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Minnesota track & field program will head home from the Rod McCravy Memorial with six event titles after closing out the weekend in Kentucky.
Men's Highlights
Jonathan Tharaldsen picked up his third-straight win in the men's shot put while the redshirt senior continues to approach Ron Backes' school record in the event. Tharaldsen hit a new personal record and cleared the best mark in the nation this season with his successful attempt of 20.50 meters (67-03.25 ft.). Tharaldsen remains second all-time at Minnesota in the men's shot put while Kevin Nedrick jumped into the Gophers top-10 at eighth in program history after finishing fifth on Saturday with a performance of 18.58 meters (60-11.50 ft.).
Sammie Houston also added his third title of the season on Saturday, winning the men's triple jump with a personal record of 15.47 meters (50-09.25 ft.). The performance moves Houston up to sixth all-time in the men's triple jump at the University of Minnesota.
In the men's pole vault, the Maroon & Gold claimed three finishes in the top 10 including Ben Ose's fourth-place finish at 5.30 meters (17-04.50 ft.) – a mark that ties the Minnesota newcomer for 10th in program history. John Uchytil followed Ose in fifth while Mike Herauf was sixth – both Gophers cleared 5.15 meters (16-10.75 ft.).
Additionally, the Gophers picked up a third-place finish in the men's 4x400 meter relay with a season-best time of 3:10.59 from Jonathan Webb, Elliott Davis, Jackson Wellenstein and Ben Psicihulis. The team also added a trio of top-10 finishes in the men's 400 meters as Psicihulis finished fourth at 47.69, Davis came in eighth at 47.99 and Wellenstein finished ninth at 48.00.
The Maroon & Gold also picked up a pair of top-10 finishes in the men's mile as Hunter Lucas came in third at 4:12.65 while Khalid Hussein finished fifth at 4:16.27. Declan Dahlberg added a sixth-place finish in the men's 3,000 meters with a time of 8:32.81
Women's Highlights
On the track, Abby Kohut-Jackson and Sophie Schmitz led the women with titles in the mile and 800 meters, respectively. Kohut-Jackson clocked a career-best time of 4:48.17 to win the mile and lead six Gophers among the top 15 at the meet while Schmitz posted a winning time of 2:10.12 in the 800 meters just ahead of Molly Roach, who came in third in a career-best 2:12.45.
Devia Brown won women's shot put with a season-best mark of 16.31 meters (53-06.25 ft.), landing fifth among all-time Gophers in her second appearance for the Maroon & Gold. Tess Keyzers also landed a podium finish in third place (16.15 meters, 53-00.00 ft.).
Amira Young also picked up a top-three finish on the track, taking third in the 60 meters in 7.40 seconds. Octavia Cato posted a career-best time of 7.54 seconds in the preliminary heats to move into sole possession of 10th in Minnesota history. Cato went on to place seventh overall in 7.55 seconds in the final.
Lorean Murray rounded out the Gopher women's all-time top-10 performances with an indoor career best of 12.55 meters (41-02.25 ft.) to finish fifth in women's triple jump and move up one spot to rank sixth in Minnesota history.

Members of the team also competed at the UW-Stout Open on Saturday where Kayla Baker (women's 800 meters), Julia Hayes (women's 60 meter hurdles), and Nate Hoglund (men's 200 meters), Marquez Clerveaux (men's 400 meters), and Kostas Zaltos (men's weight throw) won titles. All five winners competed as unattached participants at the meet.
