Preview: Gophers Open 2020 Dual Season at Hawaii

1/8/2020 11:33:00 AM | Women's Swimming & Diving

THIS WEEK
Saturday, Jan. 11 – at RV/NR Hawaii, 4 p.m. CST The RV/No. 24 Minnesota swimming & diving team will compete in their first dual meet in over two months this Saturday when they take on RV/NR Hawaii at 4 p.m. CST in Honolulu, Oahu.

Although the Gophers have been in Hawaii since Dec. 31, they have been exclusively training at the University of Hawaii up until this point. This will all change on Jan. 11, as the Rainbow Warriors and Gophers go head-to-head to open up their 2020 dual seasons.

RETURN OF DUAL SEASON
Minnesota has not competed in a dual meet since Nov. 8, when they hosted Wisconsin in a Big Ten Conference battle at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Both the Gopher men and women came up short in that meeting, as the Badgers prevailed 177-123 and 155-145, respectively.

Saturday's dual with Hawaii kick starts the Maroon and Gold's 2020 portion of dual meet season, which also features match-ups with USC, Northwestern and Purdue.

LAST TIME OUT
Although the Gophers have not had a dual meet since November, the program did host one of the fastest mid-season invitationals ever this past December in the form of the Minnesota Invite. Minnesota's women's team finished fifth at the event, while the men placed sixth against a formidable grouping of opponents: California, Michigan, Texas, Arizona, Harvard and Iowa.

Countless Gophers registered new personal best times throughout the course of the four-day invite, as well as several notable individual finishes. Sophomore Max McHugh took first place in the men's 100 breast (50.74), swimming the nation's fastest time of the season en route to an NCAA "A" Cut. McHugh also placed second in the 200 breast (1:51.62), turning in another NCAA "A" Cut and the second-fastest time in the country of the campaign.

Senior Lindsey Kozelsky finished second and third in the women's 100 breast (58.66) and 200 breast (2:09.46), respectively. Both of Kozelsky's times came in at top-20 on the season, with her mark in the 100 breast ranking third.

As for the divers, sophomore Joy Zhu swept the women's 1-meter (302.40) and 3-meter springboard (346.40). Freshman Jake Butler earned second place in the 3-meter (362.90) and third place in the 1-meter (298.30).

IN THE RANKINGS
Heading into Saturday's Hawaii dual, the Minnesota men and women both received recognition in the most recent CSCAA TYR Top 25 Poll. The Gopher women currently find themselves ranked at No. 24 in the nation, while the men were acknowledged in the receiving votes section.

As for Hawaii, the Rainbow Warrior men received votes in the latest poll, with the women's team being absent from the rankings.

SERIES HISTORY
Minnesota features a pristine record against their upcoming host, as neither the men nor women have a loss to the Rainbow Warriors on their resume. On the men's side, the Gophers are 11-0 versus Hawaii dating back to the 2008-09 season. Meanwhile, the women are an equally impressive 8-0 since the two teams first faced off back in the 2011-12 campaign.

B1G ACCOLADES
Through the 2019 portion of this season's schedule, Minnesota boasts nine total weekly Big Ten Conference awards. The team has earned five Big Ten Swimmer of the Week nods in McHugh (Oct. 30, Nov. 13, Dec. 11), Kozelsky (Nov. 13) and Tevyn Waddell (Oct. 30). Additionally, Gavin Olson has twice been named Freshman of the Week (Oct. 30, Nov. 13), while Butler and Zhu garnered Diver of the Week honors on Oct. 16 and Dec. 11, respectively.

With nine accolades this early in the season, the Gophers have already out-performed their recognition from both 2016-17 and 2017-18 and look capable of besting last year's total of 15 weekly awards.

UP NEXT
The Gophers next dual meet will not come until the team departs Hawaii, as Minnesota is scheduled to travel to USC to swim against the Trojans on Jan. 17. Two weeks thereafter, the Maroon and Gold will trek to West Lafayette, Ind. to take on Purdue and Northwestern in a Big Ten tri-dual (Jan. 31-Feb. 1).
