Gophers Begin 2020 Big Tens with Pair of Top-Eight Finishes

The Minnesota swimming and diving program kicked off their championship season on Wednesday, with the Gopher women beginning competition at the 2020 Big Ten Conference Championships in Iowa City, Iowa.
In fifth place after day one, Minnesota registered top-eight finishes in both the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay. With relays scoring double at Big Tens, the opening night performance represented a notable first step for the U.
The night started off with the 200 medley relay, in which the team of Emily Cook, Lindsey Kozelsky, Tevyn Waddell and Grace Bennin finished fourth with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:36.57.
Following up the fourth place performance, the Minnesota women again found themselves on the top-eight podium with a seventh place result in the 800 free relay (7:07.26). This time around, it was Kate Sullivan, Jordan McGinty, Waddell and Kelli McCarthy scoring the points for the Maroon and Gold. Leading off the relay, Sullivan recorded the fastest split (1:46.07) for Minnesota.
With 98 total points after day one, the Gophers will return to the pool tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. CT for the Thursday preliminary session. Finals on day two are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
