With day two of the 2020 Women's Big Ten Conference Championships in the books, the Maroon and Gold currently sit sixth in the standings after the shortest day of individual events.
Joy Zhu once again stood out for the Gophers, placing second in the 1-meter springboard (306.75) and becoming the first Minnesota competitor to reach the top-three thus far in Iowa City. After placing sixth in preliminaries to earn a spot in the finals, the sophomore surged back in the evening session and accepted her much-deserved silver medal.
On the swimming end, Kate Sullivan notched the best individual finish for the Gophers, placing tenth in the 500 freestyle (4:42.08) and dropping two seconds off of her prelims time. In the process, Sullivan earned herself both an NCAA ' B' cut and a personal best in the event. Abbey Kilgallon recorded her own personal best as well, finishing 21st with a time of 4:46.59.
Three Gophers qualified for finals in the 200 IM. Tevyn Waddell touched 14th with a time of 1:59.02, while Jordan McGinty and Rachel Butler finished 20th (1:59.77) and 21st (2:00.23), respectively.
In the final individual event of the night, Lindsey Kozelsky and Olivia Bloomer led the way for the Maroon and Gold in the 50 free. Kozelsky took 18th (22.77), while Bloomer took 23rd (22.91).
Emily Cook, Kozelsky, Waddell and McGinty took the reigns in the evening's relay event, as the quartet finished fifth in the 400 Medley Relay (3:32.09).
Tomorrow's slate holds in store some more exciting races, with prelims kicking off at 11 a.m. CT with the 100 butterfly. Fans can catch all of the 2020 Big Ten Championships through the BTN+ streaming service.
