2/21/2020 9:56:00 PM | Women's Swimming & Diving
After the third day of competition at the 2020 Big Ten Conference Championships, Minnesota improved their placement by moving into fifth place at the end of the evening with 473 points.
Lindsey Kozelsky became the first individual swimmer to reach the podium as she notched a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 58.81. After the senior finished sixth in the morning preliminaries, she dropped 0.49 seconds to improve to third, just .21 seconds behind an NCAA 'A' cut.
Competing alongside Kozelsky in the 100 breast were Emma Lezer, Grace Bennin and Madison Preiss, who finished 12th (1:00.49), 22nd (1:01.53) and 24th (1:01.78), respectively.
In the 100 backstroke, Emily Cook was the sole Gopher to reach finals and she did so with style, earning her way to the A final. In the finals, Cook improved upon her prelim place, finishing seventh in the event (53.16).
Tevyn Waddell had her best finish of the night in the 100 fly, placing sixth overall in the event (52.65). Alongside the senior was Preiss, who tallied another finals finish at 14th (53.96).
In the 400 IM, all four Gophers competing in prelims made the cut for finals. Patricia Van Law led the charge with a 14th overall finish as the junior touched in 4:14.13. In the C final, Kelli McCarthy, Rachel Butler and Abbey Erwin finished two-three-four, finishing the event 18th (4:12.92), 19th (4:15.07) and 20th (4:16.70), respectively.
In the diving well, Joy Zhu mesmerized her audience for the second day in a row as the sophomore standout took home silver in the 3-meter springboard (336.60) event. Zhu concludes her first-ever Big Ten meet with a pair of top-three podium finishes.
On the heels of yesterday's performance, the Wuhan, China native improved to third in prelims, earning a well-deserved finals spot. Then, after five dives, Zhu needed a phenomenal finish in order to medal. She did just that, scoring 64.5 on her final dive of the evening and ending the night smiling proudly from atop the podium.
Nine different Gophers managed lifetime bests throughout day three.
