Gophers Clinch Border Battle Victory over Wisconsin; Coach Young Captures 200th Win

3/8/2020 3:57:00 PM | Men's Tennis

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota men's tennis team clinched their first Big Ten conference win 5-2 today over the Wisconsin Badgers.

Doubles victories from the No. 3 and 1 doubles positions of Eli Ogilvy/Sebastian Vile & Siim Troost/Vlad Lobak paved the way heading into singles.

Following doubles, four of six Gophers clinched victories to earn the Border Battle dual. Wins came from Lobak, Ogilvy, Jackson Allen and Stefan Milicevic.

Most notably, this win marks Geoff Young's 200th victory as head coach of the Gophers' squad. He is just the third coach to reach this mark, (David Geatz - 318, Jerry Noyce - 260).

"Today I was happy with our doubles, that's a big point to get today," said head coach Geoff Young. "Wisconsin fought all the way to the end and I give them credit for their spirit."

Doubles Competition
Leading the way, Eli Ogilvy/Sebastian Vile & Siim Troost/Vlad Lobak got Minnesota up on the board early before heading into singles. Ogilvy/Vile won 6-2, while Troost/Lobak won 6-4. Going unfinished, Stefan Milicevic/Jackson Allen ended their match 4-4.

Singles Competition
Using their home court advantage, Minnesota easily slid through to the end with wins coming from Lobak, Ogilvy, Allen and Milicevic. Before finishing, the Maroon & Gold led 3-0, with four singles matches remaining.

In the No. 5 spot, Allen's match was the deciding factor. Going to a tiebreaker, he defeated Wisconsin's Leonard Soha 6-1, 7-6. Finishing last, but certainly not least, Milicevic earned the final point of the afternoon 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.

Notable
Now halfway through his 14th season coaching the Gophers, head coach Geoff Young captured his 200th today. He is the 3rd coach in Minnesota men's tennis history to reach the mark, (David Geatz - 318, Jerry Noyce - 260).

Quotable
"200 wins is a product of all our players giving such a great effort for their school," said head coach Geoff Young. "Coach Ljubic deserves a ton of credit because those wins came under him as well. We're proud of the fraternity of great players and people that have played for the Gophers over the years."

Up Next
The Golden Gophers will travel down to New Orleans, La., next weekend for a match up against Tulane in the Bayou. Minnesota will pick up Big Ten play on March 22 in Iowa City, Ia., to compete against the Hawkeyes.
