4/10/2020 2:02:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Men's Track & Field, Women's Cross Country, Women's Track & Field

Take a look back at the Gophers' achievements during the 2019 cross country and 2020 indoor track & field seasons.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher track & field and cross country program had a year to remember in 2019-20 despite the indoor season ending and the outdoor season being canceled on March 12, 2020, when the Big Ten Conference and NCAA announced they were ceasing competitions and championships because of COVID-19 public health concerns.

NCAA Championship Qualifiers
The University of Minnesota track & field program earned 13 entries to the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships. The Maroon & Gold men led all Big Ten programs and were tied for sixth in the nation with eight entries while the Gopher women boasted five entries including Nayoka Clunis, who qualified in both the shot put and the weight throw.

Joining Clunis on the women's side were Devia Brown, ranked 13th in the nation in shot put (16.87 meters, 55-04.25 ft); Ayesha Champagnie, ranked eighth in the field at 4,155 points; and Bethany Hasz, who had the third-fastest time among the athletes selected for the 5,000 meters (15:25.33). Clunis was seeded 10th in weight throw at 22.13 meters (72-07.25 ft.) and 11th in shot put at 17.05 meters (55-11.25 ft.).

On the men's side, the throwers led the way for the Maroon & Gold with four overall qualifiers and three competitors in the men's weight throw -- both numbers led the nation. In the weight throw, Kieran McKeag was third among qualifiers at 22.93 meters (75-02.75 ft.) while Kaleb Siekmeier was 11th in the field at 22.09 meters (72-05.75 ft.) and Jon Nerdal ranked 15th at 21.72 meters (71-03.25 ft.). Jonathan Tharaldsen ranked fourth among men's shot put entrants at 20.50 meters (67-03.25 ft.). Additionally, Sammie Houston was ninth among qualifiers in the men's triple jump at 16.18 meters (53-01.00 ft.) while Michael Burke ranked 12th in the men's high jump at 2.23 meters (7-03.75 ft.). On the track, Minnesota qualified a pair of relay squads for the national championships with the eighth fastest distance medley relay in the field at 9:31.52 (Shane Streich, Elliott Davis, Dawson LaRance, Owen Hoeft) and the 11th best 4x400 meter relay at 3:07.16 (Elliott Davis, Jackson Wellenstein, Jonathan Webb, Ben Psicihulis).

For the men, Alec Basten started the year off by breaking the school 10K record during the cross country season at 23:26.7 before Sammie Houston ended the indoor track & field campaign with a new men's triple jump record of 16.18 meters (53-01.00 ft.) to win the Big Ten title in the discipline.

2020 B1G Indoor Track & Field Championships Rewind
Minnesota earned a pair of top-three team finishes as the Gopher women finished as team runner-up and the Gopher men came in third overall at the 2020 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships. The women recorded 99 points, trailing B1G champion Ohio State by just five points. On the men's side, Indiana took home the team title with 120.5 points, followed by runner-up Iowa (107 points) and Minnesota (88.5 points). In total, the Gophers finished the meet with eight All-Big Ten award recipients led by All-Big Ten First Team honoree and B1G men's triple jump champion Sammie Houston

B. Hasz, Miller Earn Regional Honors
