MINNEAPOLIS – Nine members of the Minnesota swimming & diving team have been named College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America All-Americans, as announced Wednesday morning.
Gophers earning CSCAA All-American nods include Jake Butler (1-meter springboard), Duncan Lester (1-meter) and Max McHugh (100 breaststroke, 200 breast) on the men's side. This trio is accompanied by Emily Cook (100 backstroke), Jaclynn Fowler (1-meter, 3-meter), Lindsey Kozelsky (100 breast, 200 breast), Jae Sarkis (3-meter), Tevyn Waddell (200 back, 100 butterfly) and Joy Zhu (1-meter, 3-meter) for the women's team.
All nine of the aforementioned members of the Maroon and Gold previously secured bids to compete at the 2020 NCAA Championships before the season ended on March 12, 2020, when the Big Ten and NCAA announced they were ceasing competitions and championships because of COVID-19 public health concerns.
Now, all nine members of this elite group are officially CSCAA All-Americans for the 2019-20 season. For Butler, Lester, Fowler, Sarkis and Zhu, today's All-American accolades mark the first-ever in their college careers. As for the two seniors in Kozelsky and Waddell, this represents the fourth consecutive campaign in which they have garnered some level of All-American recognition.
After placing second in the 200 breast and third in the 100 breast at the NCAA Championships last season, McHugh has now achieved All-American status in each of his first two collegiate campaigns. Although Cook was an All-American in the 200 medley relay (honorable mention) and 400 medley relay as a sophomore, Wednesday's accolade comes as her first career All-American honor as an individual competitor.
