Keyzers, Young Lead Gophers in Nebraska

The Gophers combined to win 12 events at the Nebraska Triangular on Saturday.
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Tess Keyzers and Amira Young each won two individual events to lead the Golden Gophers as the University of Minnesota men's and women's track & field team combined to win 12 events at the Nebraska Triangular on Saturday.
Keyzers swept the women's throws, winning both shot put (15.84m, 51-11.75) and weight throw (20.79m, 68-02.50 ft.) in her 2021 debut while Young won both the 60-meter dash (7.34) and the 200-meter dash, where she improved on her own Minnesota program record with a winning time of 23.61 seconds.
Abigail Schaaffe and Val Larson also picked up multiple titles, winning their respective individual events along with helping the Gopher women to the 4x400-meter relay title. Larson won the 600 meters in 1:30.86 and Schaaffe won the 800 meters in 2:11.90 while the duo also joined Janielle Josephs and Jayla Campbell on the winning 4x400-meter relay team in 3:43.88.
"We took a nice step in week two," director of track & field/cross country Matt Bingle said. "There were a lot of good performance from the team. We have to keep working each day and stay healthy -- those are the main goals right now. Consistency in those areas will get us where we need to be each week."
Facing competition from Iowa and host Nebraska, the Gopher women won nine events and the Minnesota men added three event champions at the team's second competition of the indoor season. The Gophers swept the weight throw, 60 meters, and mile with victories in both the men's and women's competitions.
Kaleb Siekmeier joined Keyzers in claiming first place in weight throw, posting a season-opening mark of 21.04m (69-00.50 ft.). Likewise, Kion Benjamin joined Young in collecting top honors in the 60 meters with a career-best time of 6.73 (6.725) to move into fifth among all-time Gophers. In the mile, Anastasia Korzenowski (career-best 4:46.83) and Eli Hoeft (4:09.32) both won their respective races. Bethany Hasz also won her second race of the season, clocking a facility record of 15:50.74 to win the 5,000 meters.
The Gophers are back in action next weekend as the squad is scheduled to face Big Ten Conference competition from Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin on the road at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, next Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan. 23..
