Gophers to Compete at Larry Wieczorek Invitational

Minnesota travels to Iowa City, Iowa, to face Big Ten foes at the Hawkeyes' Larry Wieczorek Invitational this week.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track & field team is back in action this weekend when the Golden Gophers travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to face Big Ten Conference foes Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin at the Hawkeyes' Larry Wieczorek Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

The two-day competition begins at 1 p.m. CT Friday and 12 p.m. CT Saturday at the Iowa Recreation Building. 

Last Time Out
The Gophers combined for 12 event titles at the Nebraska Triangular last weekend. Tess Keyzers (weight throw and shot put) and Amira Young (60 meters, 200 meters) led the team with two individual event titles while Val Larson (600 meters) and Abigail Schaaffe (800 meters) won individual crowns along with teaming up with Janielle Josephs and Jayla Campbell on the winning 4x400-meter relay team. 

Kaleb Siekmeier joined Keyzers in claiming first place in weight throw, posting a season-opening mark of 21.04m (69-00.50 ft.). Likewise, Kion Benjamin joined Young in collecting top honors in the 60 meters with a career-best time of 6.73 (6.725) to move into fifth among all-time Gophers. In the mile, Anastasia Korzenowski (career-best 4:46.83) and Eli Hoeft (4:09.32) both won their respective races. Bethany Hasz also won her second race of the season, clocking a facility record of 15:50.74 to win the 5,000 meters.

Weekly Awards
The Gophers have secured three weekly awards this season as Bethany Hasz and Alec Basten were honored for their performances at the season-opening Hawkeye Border Battle. Hasz was named both the USTFCCCA National Track Athlete of the Week and Big Ten Conference Track Athlete of the Week following her performance in the 3,000 meters while Basten was named B1G Co-Track Athlete of the Week after clocking a career-best 4:03.36 mile at the Hawkeye Border Battle to move into eighth in Gophers' history.

Program-Record Sprint
Amira Young improved on her own Minnesota indoor program record in the 200 meters, clocking a career-best time of 23.61 seconds at the Nebraska Triangular and improving on her previous best of 23.64 set at the 2020 Big Ten Indoor Championships. Fellow sprinter Kion Benjamin moved up Minnesota's all-time ranks in the 60 meters with his career-best time of 6.73 (6.725) at the Nebraska Triangular as well; he climbed from 10th to fifth on the Gophers' all-time list.

All-Time Top-10 Miles
Alec Basten and Owen Hoeft both clocked all-time top-10 mile times with PRs at the Hawkeye Border Battle. Basten ran 4:03.36 for eighth among all-time Gophers while Hoeft was runner-up in 4:03.54 for ninth in program history.
