Gophers Kick off Weekend in Iowa

Minnesota won four events on day one of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Maroon & Gold swept the weight throw titles and the Gopher women added two more event crowns on the track as the University of Minnesota track & field team competed on day one of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday.
Tess Keyzers and Kaleb Siekmeier both claimed their second weight throw titles of the season as the Gophers swept the weight throw competition for the second-straight meet. Keyzers recorded a winning throw of 21.26m (69-09.00 ft.), just 0.50 inches shy of her career-best, while Siekmeier posted a season-best throw of 20.99m (68-10.50 ft.) to lead the Gopher men. Phillipe Barnett finished third with a season-best mark of 20.47m (67-02.00 ft.) as well. The Minnesota men are now a perfect three-for-three in weight throw titles at three competitions this season with Barnett winning one and Siekmeier winning two.
On the track, Abigail Schaaffe took home top honors in the 600 meters in a career-best 1:30.99, which is good for sixth among all-time Gophers. Val Larson finished as runner-up in 1:31.15, and Ben Psicihulis led the Gopher men on the track with a third-place time of 1:18.59 in the 600 meters.
Rounding out Minnesota's event champions was Amira Young, who collected her third-straight 200-meter crown of the season with a winning time of 23.87 seconds. The Gophers once again grabbed the top two spots as Lexi Romero finished second in 24.61 seconds. Jayla Campbell was the top performer in the unseeded heats of the women's 200m in 25.28 seconds as well.
The Gophers also recorded two top-three finishes in shot put on Friday. On the women's side, Keyzers earned a runner-up finish with a season-best mark of 15.93m (52-03.25 ft.), and Eric Rousemiller came in third for the Gopher men with a career-best throw of 17.28m (56-08.50 ft.).
The Gophers wrap up this weekend's competition slate with day two of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Saturday. Action begins at 12 p.m. CT at the Iowa Recreation Building.
