‘U’ Falls 2-1 in Top-Five Showdown with Huskies

Chaz Lucius scored his first goal with the Gophers.
MINNEAPOLIS – Chaz Lucius' first career goal briefly rallied the No. 4 Gopher men's hockey program, but the tie wouldn't last as Minnesota fell to No. 2 St. Cloud State 2-1 on Friday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Despite outshooting the Huskies 23-18 on the night and 10-2 in the third period, Minnesota (2-1-0 overall, 0-0-0-0-0 Big Ten) came up on the short end of the series opener between the in-state rivals.
St. Cloud State (4-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) struck first with an unassisted tally from Jami Krannila at 16:10 of the first period as the goal stood along on the scoreboard into the third period.
In the third, Matthew Knies forced an offensive zone turnover and Ben Meyers found Lucius in front of the net for the temporary equalizer at 5:42 of the final stanza. The tie would last just over three minutes before Mason Salquist scored the game winner at 8:57 with assists from Joe Molenaar and Jack Peart.
Jack LaFontaine (2-1-0) made 16 saves in goal for the Maroon & Gold while David Hrenak (4-1-0) made 22 saves for the Huskies.
Coach's Comments
"We grew up tonight. It was a tough hockey game, but I liked what we did," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "We saw a lot of good things tonight, but it was a tough lesson."
Noteworthy
While Lucius scored his first career goal in the loss, the freshman forward has actually recorded points in all three games this season and currently sits with three points (one goal, two assists) in three games with Minnesota.
