Gophers Take Care of Iowa in Season Opener

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota women's swimming and diving team opened the 2021-22 season in dominating fashion with a 156-104 victory Friday afternoon over Iowa at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium in Iowa City, Iowa.

"It was fun to be on the bus, having a chance for our team to connect with one another," head coach Kelly Kremer said. "We didn't have opportunities like this a year ago. In terms of performances, this gave us a great chance to see where we are at. We are looking forward to building off this as we continue to work hard toward our team goals."

The Golden Gophers won the first 10 swimming events of the meet and grabbed the top two spots in eight of those 10. Minnesota swam the last four events as exhibitions.

Sophomore Pyper Doo and junior Emma Lezer were each a part of three first-place finishes, while sophomore Indy Jongman captured two on her own.

Doo and Lezer were each a part of the meet's first race, helping the Gophers to first-place in the 200 medley relay (1:44.92), while Doo then won the 50 free (23.95) and 100 free (52.64). Lezer got her individual wins in the 100 breast (1:03.94) and 200 breast (2:20.26).

Jongman showed off her versatility in the pool with victories in the 200 free (1:54.15) and 200 back (2:02.78).

After Minnesota's win in the opening 200 medley relay, freshman Eliot Kennedy grabbed a victory in her first collegiate race by winning the 1000 free in a time of 10:18.76. Two events later, fellow freshman Hannah Cornish secured her first win by touching the wall in 56.22 in the 100 back.

The other Gopher to capture first place at the meet was sophomore Megan Van Berkom, whose time of 2:01.28 gave her the 200 fly.

Though they were swam as exhibitions, Kennedy had the fastest time in the 500 free (5:04.86), while Cornish did the same in the 100 fly (56.37) and Lezer's mark of 2:09.43 was best in the 200 IM. Minnesota also had the lowest time in the final event of the night as senior Emma Linscott and sophomores Maeve O'Driscoll, Dani Cramer and Paula Rodriguez Rivero swam the 400 free relay in a time of 3:32.14.

In diving, sophomore Megan Phillip took second on the 3-meter board with a score of 300.70, while the Gophers made the 1-meter event an exhibition. Avrianna Osero had the second-best score on the 1-meter with a 273.15.

Minnesota now has three weeks to prepare for its home opener against Nebraska on Oct. 29. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
