11/30/2021 11:01:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS – After nearly a month off from competition, the Minnesota swimming and diving programs return to the pool this week for the prestigious Minnesota Invite, hosted by the University of Minnesota Recreation and Wellness.
Taking place Dec. 1-4 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center, the Minnesota Invite has been dubbed the "fastest Division I Invite in the country" and features some of the top teams in the country.
The event starts Wednesday night at 6 p.m., while the following days will feature prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. All-session and single-session tickets are on sale now. Per University of Minnesota policy, masks are required indoors regardless of vaccination status.
On the men's side, the field includes four teams ranked in the latest CSCAA poll, including No. 1 Texas, No. 3 Cal, No. 4 Michigan and No. 17 Wisconsin. Arizona and Harvard are also receiving votes in the poll. The women's field is highlighted by No. 2 Texas, No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Cal and No. 17 Wisconsin.
To this point in the season, the Minnesota men and women have only competed in dual meets. The Gopher men are 2-1 with victories over St. Thomas and Purdue and a loss to Wisconsin. The women, meanwhile, have also topped St. Thomas and have additional victories over Iowa and Nebraska with their lone loss also coming against the Badgers.
The Gopher men, ranked No. 23 in SwimSwam's November power rankings, have been led this year by defending NCAA champion Max McHugh, who has posted NCAA 'B' cuts in the 100 (52.73) and 200 (1:56.14) breaststroke events. The senior has won four individual races and been a part of four relay race victories this season.
In the freestyle, redshirt sophomore Lucas Farrar has the top times on the team in both the 50 and 100, while freshman Bar Soloveychik has the fastest marks in the 200 and 500. Sophomore Chris Nagy is pacing the distance swimmers, posting the first and third best times in the 1000 free so far this year.
Sophomore Kaiser Neverman has been the team's top performer in the butterfly, posting team-best times in both the 100 and 200, while in the backstroke, juniors Desmon Sachtjen and Gavin Olson have the top marks in the 100 and 200, respectively. Olson also has the fastest time in the 200 IM, while sophomore Sawyer Grimes can say the same in the 400 IM.
Men's diving has been dominated by Jake Butler, who has claimed first place on the 3-meter boards in all three meets this year and twice on the 1-meter. He was named Big Ten Diver of the Week after his performance at Purdue.
On the women's side, sophomore Megan Van Berkom has the team's first 'B' cut of the season, doing so against Nebraska in the 200 fly (1:57.11). She also has the team's fastest time in the 100 fly and 200 IM.
Van Berkom is one of three Gophers to hold top times in multiple events this year. Joining her are freshman Hannah Cornish (100 and 200 free) and senior Abbey Kilgallon (500 and 1000 free). Cornish won six non-exhibition events against Nebraska and St. Thomas en route to winning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
Rounding out the freestyle, junior Maggie Summit has the best finish in the 50, while the backstroke has seen fifth-year senior Emily Cook lead the way in the 100 and sophomore Paula Rodriguez Rivero do the same in the 200.
Juniors Emma Lezer (100) and Grace Bennin (200) have posted the fastest times in the breaststroke, while fellow junior Rachel Butler owns the top mark on the team this year in the 400 IM.
In the team's last meet against Wisconsin, fifth-year redshirt senior Sarah Bacon made her season debut and swept the 1- and 3-meter boards. Both scores are the highest on the team so far this year for the four-time NCAA champion.
