Pack the Pool Event Set for Friday as Gophers Host Badgers

11/4/2021 12:06:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's and women's swimming and diving teams are ready to "Pack the Pool" as they get set for a Border Battle matchup with Wisconsin this Friday at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

The matchup with the Badgers is set for 4 p.m. with free admission, though masks are required. Streaming coverage will be provided on BTN+ and live stats will be available on GopherSports.com and the Meet Mobile app.

Following Friday's dual meet, volunteer assistant coach and Olympic Gold Medalist Bowe Becker will be signing autographs.

Both the men's and women's teams are undefeated in their dual meets so far this year, with the men 2-0 and the women 3-0. Both defeated St. Thomas last Saturday, while the men have also defeated Purdue, and the women have additional victories over Iowa and Nebraska.

The Gopher men have been led this year by defending NCAA champion Max McHugh, who has won five races already and posted NCAA 'B' cuts in the 100 (53.34) and 200 (1:57.05) breaststroke events.

In addition, junior Gavin Olson has the top Minnesota times in the 200 back and 200 IM, while freshman Bar Soloveychik has the fastest marks on the team in the 200 free and 500 free.

Men's diving has been dominated by Jake Butler, who has claimed first place on the 1- and 3-meter boards in both meets this year. He was named Big Ten Diver of the Week after his performance at Purdue.

On the women's side, sophomore Megan Van Berkom has the team's first 'B' cut of the season, doing so last Friday against Nebraska in the 200 fly (1:57.11). She also has the team's fastest time in the 100 fly.

Junior Rachel Butler has three top times on the team this year in the 200 back, 200 IM and 400 IM, while senior Abbey Kilgallon can say the same in the 500 free and 1000 free.

Like Kilgallon, Hannah Cornish has also laid claim to Minnesota's top marks in two events: the 100 free and 200 free. Last weekend, Cornish won six non-exhibition events against Nebraska and St. Thomas en route to winning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.

Last season, Minnesota and Wisconsin opened the year with the Badger women winning, 163-133, and the Wisconsin men also prevailing, 165-135. Minnesota is looking for its first dual meet victories over Wisconsin since the 2017-18 campaign.

Wisconsin's men's and women's programs are both 2-0 with tri-dual victories over Hawaii and Arizona in October. The Badgers had both Big Ten Swimmers of the Week on Oct. 27 when Andrew Benson and Phoebe Bacon took home the honors.

Friday's dual meet will be the final competition for the Gophers for nearly a month, as they'll return to the pool Dec. 1-4 at the prestigious Minnesota Invitational
