Gopher Women Land Sixth after Final Day of B1G Championships
2/27/2021 9:11:00 PM | Women's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS - With day five of the 2021 Big Ten Conference Championships officially wrapped up, the Minnesota Gophers women's swimming and diving program will finish in sixth place, with 555 total points overall.
Minnesota's best individual finish of the night belonged to freshman Indy Jongman, who touched eighth in the 200 backstroke (1:56.89). Jongman's best race of the day came in the morning's preliminary event, however, where her split of 1:56.11 earned her a lifetime best, an NCAA 'B' cut, and her spot in the night's 'A' final.
Freshman Pyper Doo led the charge for the Maroon and Gold in the 100 freestyle, touching 13th overall (49.74) in the night's final session. Like Jongman, Doo's best performance of the day came in her preliminary heat, where the Vadnais Heights, Minn. native set both a lifetime best and NCAA 'B' with her 49.50 time.
Alongside Doo in the finals of the 100 free were sophomore Maggie Summit and junior Jordan McGinty, who finished 20th (49.99) and 21st (50.29), respectively. For McGinty, this event marked the third of the Championships where she has qualified for the night's finals session, having also represented Minnesota in the 200 individual medley and 200 free earlier in the week.
Three Gophers managed to qualify for finals in the 200 breaststroke, all of whom made major improvements in the night's final individual event. Sophomore Emma Lezer led the group with a 17th place finish (2:14.06), improving three spots from her preliminary seed to win the night's 'C' final.
Right behind the sophomore was freshman Molly Urkiel, who managed to set lifetime bests during both sessions of the event. After claiming the 22nd seed with her preliminary time of 2:15.97, Urkiel dropped another second and a half to place 18th overall in the event in a lifetime best 2:14.38. Freshman Holley Dennis scored for the Gophers in the event as well, finishing 23rd in a time of 2:16.00.
Junior Abbey Kilgallon and Senior Abbey Erwin both managed scoring efforts in the 1650 free, finishing 13th (16:31.83) and 21st (16:41.76), respectively.
The final relay event of the Championships proved an exciting one, as the team of McGinty, Summit, Doo and Linscott dropped virtually two full seconds off of their seed time to finish sixth overall (3:18.94) in the 400 freestyle relay.
Minnesota did not compete in diving today at the Big Ten Diving Championships, which is being held at Purdue University. Minnesota had one confirmed COVID-19 case in its Tier 1 contingent, and out of an abundance of caution, it withheld all Minnesota divers from competing at the event today.

"I asked the team for a favor on Wednesday night, and let's just say they delivered and then some," said head coach Kelly Kremer. "I'd like to thank our seniors for all they have done for us. They are leaving an amazing group of women behind, and I am sure they join me in being excited to see what this group will do next season and beyond!"
