Three Gophers Punch Ticket on Day One of NCAA Zones
3/11/2021 1:52:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS - Day one of the 2021 NCAA Zone D Diving Championships was an overall success for the Maroon and Gold, with three of four competing Gophers punching their tickets to the 2021 NCAA Championships later this month.
Redshirt-senior Sarah Bacon let her dominance show once again by placing first on the one-meter springboard with a 12-dive score of 701.60, nearly a full 95 points ahead of the nearest competitor. This year's trip will mark her fourth career journey to the NCAA Championships where the two-time one-meter reigning champion will look to defend her title later this month.
Joining Bacon on the national stage will be freshman standout Megan Phillip, who's 12-dive flight of 569.75 earned her an eighth place finish in the day's finals session, good for a trip to her first ever NCAA Championships.
On the men's side of the diving well, Jake Butler led the way for the Gophers once again, registering a fifth place finish on the three-meter springboard with an exceptional 12-dive score of 708.05 to officially punch his ticket to NCAAs. Butler originally qualified for his first NCAA Championship in 2020 before the meet was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alongside Butler in the afternoon's finals round was senior Duncan Lester, who finished 15th overall with a 12-dive score of 628.65. He'll look to earn his bid to the national championships on Saturday when the men take on the one-meter.
As neither of the men will compete on the platform, only the women will return to the well tomorrow to face the three-meter competition.
