Bacon Dominates Again on Day Two of Zones
3/12/2021 1:39:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS - For the second day straight, every competing Gopher qualified for the afternoon's finals round at the 2021 NCAA Zone D Diving Championships, with one effectively punching her ticket for the second time this season to compete at the 2021 NCAA Championships later this month.
The question one finds themselves asking about redshirt-senior Sarah Bacon's performances in the diving well seems to be vastly different than for any other collegiate diver. For Bacon, it is not a question of "Where did she place?" or "Is she going to qualify?" like it would be for the rest of the field. Rather, one finds themselves asking things like "How much did she win by?" or "What records did she break this time?", just to name a few. It is no longer a question of how well she does, but rather one of how excessively will she dominate her competition.
Bacon backed up that line of thinking once again on day two of Zones, winning the three-meter springboard with a 12-dive score of 735.50, beating every other competitor by more than 35 points. Her dominant performance marked her second automatic qualification to the 2021 NCAA Championships later this month, after the Indianapolis, Ind. native qualified yesterday in the one-meter as well.
Freshman Megan Phillip qualified for the afternoon's finals session in the three-meter alongside Bacon, finishing 17th overall in a 12-dive score of 570.45. As she also qualified for the national championships during yesterday's one-meter, she will be joining Bacon later this month in Greensboro, N.C. despite missing the cut during today's competition.
The men's side of the Championships took on the Platform event today, an event that neither of the Gopher men competed in. They will look ahead to the one-meter during the final day of competition tomorrow morning.
Saturday will feature the platform event for the women, with Phillip set to be the sole representative for the Maroon and Gold in the event.
Below is a full list of the Gophers performances on day two.
