MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota baseball program dropped game two of their three-game series against Northwestern on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 10-3.
Although the Maroon & Gold were ultimately unable to secure a victory, the Gophers jumped out to an early lead in the second inning and remained on top up until the sixth inning of play.
Ronald Sweeny got the scoring started for Minnesota in the second with a two-out, two-run single to right field that plated Chase Stanke and Jack Kelly. In the fourth, Sam Ireland doubled to right field with one out and later came around to score on a two-out RBI single to left field off the bat of Andrew Wilhite.
Minnesota's 3-0 lead held until the fifth inning, when Northwestern finally broke into the scoring column on an Anthony Calarco RBI double. The Wildcats then tied up the game in the sixth as Vincent Bianchina drove in two with a triple to right-centerfield.
With the score tied at 3-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, things began to unravel for the Maroon & Gold. Northwestern took their first lead of the game thanks to a five-run seventh, then extended their advantage to 10-3 in the eighth on a two-run Michael Trautwein home run.
Minnesota reliever Joshua Culliver was saddled with the loss, pitching one inning with three runs allowed on two hits and one walk while striking out two. Starting pitcher Jack Liffrig received a no-decision after firing five innings with three earned runs allowed on five hits and three walks, striking out four.
Northwestern starting pitcher Tyler Uberstine earned his second win of the season, lasting seven innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits and two walks. Uberstine struck out seven in the win.
Zack Elliott and Ireland each collected doubles in the game for Minnesota, while the likes of Zack Raabe, Stanke, Sweeny, Jack Wassel and Wilhite recorded hits as well.
Quotable
"We got out of a tough first inning situation and got a big double play, and got some momentum from that," head coach John Anderson said. "But, it seems like when it rains, it pours. It's everything. It's not one thing. It's just the little things that you probably don't notice on the stat sheet that happen during the course of the game. Again, we just need to get a little bit smarter... We'll keep grinding through this."
