5/16/2021 9:45:00 AM | Men's Golf
MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan is set to start competition at the Noblesville Regional of the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships.
The 54-hole competition runs Monday through Wednesday at The Sagamore Club, which is playing as a par-721 at 7,173 yards. There are 13 teams and 10 individuals, including Flanagan, competing at the Regional; the low five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 28 to June 2.
The No. 2 seed among the individuals, Flanagan is scheduled to tee off on the front nine Monday beginning at 9:34 a.m. CT. Other individuals competing include top-seeded Ross Steelman of Missouri, Purdue's Joe Weiler and Cole Bradley, West Virginia's Mark Goetz, Zack Taylor of Coastal Carolina, Kentucky's Alex Goff, Illinois State's David Perkins, Michael Cascino of Butler and Dayton's Henry May.
In addition to top-seed Texas, which is No. 5 in the latest Golfstat rankings, the field consists of three additional top-25 teams in No. 8 North Carolina, No. 18 Tennessee and No. 19 North Florida. Louisville (28), South Florida (36), UAB (38) and Duke (43) are also in Golfstat's top 50, while Arkansas State, Campbell, Loyola Chicago, UNC-Wilmington and UT Martin round out the teams in competition.
An All-Big Ten First Team honoree, Flanagan was a two-time medalist during the regular season, winning the Boilermaker Invitational and Git R Done Husker Invitational in back-to-back tournaments. He became the first Gopher to win consecutive tournaments the spring of 2014. As a result, Flanagan also was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week after both performances.
In six stroke play tournaments this spring, Flanagan led the team in scoring average (72.06), birdies (62), percentage of scores counted (1.000), rounds under par (8) and tournaments leading the team (5). He has the three lowest rounds on the team this year by stroke and the three lowest 54-hole scores by stroke. Flanagan also owns the team's top four rounds to par and the top two 54-hole scores to par.
This will be the second appearance for Flanagan in an NCAA Regional. He also competed as an individual at the 2019 Austin Regional, finishing in a tie for 20th place.
With Flanagan's selection to the Noblesville Regional, the Gophers have had at least one golfer in NCAA Regionals for 27 of the past 29 years it has been held.
