Sweeny, Merila Homer in 6-3 Loss to UMD

5/2/2021 2:42:00 PM | Baseball

The Gophers return to action next weekend, hosting Ohio State in a three-game series at Siebert Field.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Four Gopher baseball players notched multiple hits, but Minnesota fell to the Maryland Terrapins 6-3 Sunday as the two Big Ten rivals wrapped up a three-game series at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.

Tom Skoro (2-3) got the ball to start for Minnesota (4-26) and took the loss. Josh Culliver, Ryan Duffy, Patrick Fredrickson and Nolan Burchill also saw action for the Maroon & Gold. Maryland (19-13) used six pitchers with David Falco (3-1) picking up the win and Sam Bello earning his sixth save.

Chase Stanke led the hit barrage for the Gophers, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a walk. Ronald Sweeny compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.

After the Terrapins built a four-run lead early, Minnesota's bats battled back to make it a one-run lead in the top of the fifth inning. Boston Merila blasted a solo shot for his first home run of the season and Sweeny followed up later in the inning, hitting a home run for the second-straight game. The two-run shot by the first baseman stands as his seventh of the year – most among Gopher players.

Maryland answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning and added another in the eighth to claim the win.
